Post Office Explains Joe DiMaggio Stamp

The United States Postal Service recently released a series of stamps honoring some Major League Baseball All-Stars of the past.  That seems straightforward enough, but some people have questioned if the stamp portrays DiMaggio as a left handed hitter instead of a righty.  In response, the USPS issued a statement that yes, he was indeed a right handed hitter and is pictured as such.  He looks left handed because he is following through on his swing and his lower body is not visible.  A closer look at the stamp shows that he would be holding the bat cross handed if he was a lefty, so yes, it is indeed a correct depiction of the right handed hitting DiMaggio in a follow through to his swing.

DiMaggio, a Hall of Famer who played for the Yankees from 1926 to 1951, died in 1999.  He’s also famous for his brief marriage to Marilyn Monroe in 1954.  Even though they were divorced, DiMaggio handled Monroe’s 1962 funeral arrangements and had roses delivered to her crypt in Los Angeles’ Westwood Memorial Park for 20 years after that.
