On Star Task: Celebrity Apprentice

On Celebrity Apprentice (May 8th), after La Toya is fired and NeNe quit and then was fired, the remaining contestants are tasked with creating a 60-second promotional video for OnStar, a company that sells a replacement for your rear view mirror. Their product can help find your car if it gets stolen, or you forget where you parked it like Hines Ward’s date the other day.

In Part One, Toya Sets Another Record

John Rich will be the manager for Team Backbone, which now consists of him and Lil Jon. Marlee Matlin will lead ASAP, backed up by Star Jones and Meat Loaf. After meeting with the OnStar executives, the teams run into problems:

On Team ASAP, Star and Marlee give Meat Loaf free creative rein and again Star has every intention of throwing him under the bus if anything goes wrong. She’s even willing to help that along by not preparing a script like she was supposed to and wasting time at the video shoot getting her lines wrong.

Still they manage to prepare a fairly professional video even if it has its weird spots, like Meat Loaf playing a cop who helps Marlee get her car back and then wants directions to the nearest donut show, and Star managing to get her name in the end: “I’m Star for OnStar.” The executives seemed quite impressed, except for the sidelong glance they gave each other over the donut shop bit. They later tell Donald Trump that it was out of place because police and fire fighters are heroes. Guess Meat Loaf was still in comedy mode from the last task and mistook that for creativity.

Laugh On Quote Roundup: Celebrity Apprentice

Backbone decides their concept will play off the company name: “Discover On.” John Rich gets a sinus infection that messes up his head. Lil Jon thinks the video should be shot against an all white background with some special effects that put pressure on them in terms of time. Their video presentation is a little weird compared to ASAP’s. Lil Jon is jumping all over the place, the woman is in the vehicle without a seatbelt and the OnStar executives point this glaring error out tol Donald Trump.

In the board room, ASAP says they liked Backbone’s video. Backbone doesn’t like theirs. That’s funny because we thought Backbone’s video sucked in comparison, and we really didn’t even notice the missing seatbelt until it was pointed out to us. But hey, we didn’t notice the uncorked bottle of champagne in the task where Hope was in the bubblebath with her towel. We agree that the donut shop thing was out of place, but were mucho surprised to see Team ASAP lose!

Firing Time: Trump wants to know who Marlee thinks he should fire and we weren’t surprised when she offers up Meat Loaf on a silver platter. His working style is off kilter, she claims. Star totally agrees, but Meat thinks Star is the one to blame. Branding was Star’s responsibility. Outside, Meat Loaf tries to initiate a debate but Star won’t discuss it with him because she doesn’t like being called “sweetie” and claims he has raised his voice to a level that she has no intention of dealing with. As the board listens to the argument, Donald Jr. says that there is cause to fire both Meat Loaf and Star.

When they are called back in, Trump wants to know why they were all yelling outside and arguing, but Star basically says Meat Loaf was out of control and she refused to participate after he “diminished” her with the “Sweetie” stuff. Trump is not impressed by her indignation and asks Marlee who was in charge of branding. The answer is Star and Star is finally fired.

It must have been a hell of a struggle for Star to control her mouth and not come back with one of her strategic ploys, but all she had to say was “Thank you” until she got outside in the car. Then she spun it into more evidence of her special status – being fired by one of her mentors.
