WHAT IS POLYNESIA? Polynesia is made up of words from Greek meaning “many islands”. To date, the earliest written instance of the term is in Charles de Brosses’ book which was a history of navigations in the area that came to be known as Oceania. The New World Encyclopedia says: “The term “Polynesia” was coined by Charles de Brosses in 1756, and originally applied to all the islands of the Pacific.
In 1831 Jules Dumont d’Urville introduced the terms Micronesia and Melanesia in a lecture to the Geographical Society of Paris. This division into three distinct Pacific sub-regions remains in widespread use today.” In between those two events, geographer Conrad Malte-Brun was credited with coining the term “Oceania” around 1812. Jon had an impressive start as a new champion, though I think he might be our next multi day champion if he can keep it up. Also my middle school had a computer game of geography where we had to identify where everything was in the Oceania region. But I don’t remember what the title of that game was. It was something worth remembering back then. Also VJ you heard of geosafari right? It is a great game to test people’s knowledge of geography, history, science and so forth
