Ohio State Tops Penn State in Battle of Unbeatens in College Football

Going into their seventh game of the college football season for both teams on October 21st, #3 Ohio State and #7 Penn State were both 6-0. The two Big Ten powers had each played just one Top 25 ranked team; the Buckeyes had won a 17-14 thriller at then #9 Notre Dame, while Penn State had crushed then #24 Iowa 31-0. So this trip to Columbus was a chance for Penn State to move ahead of OSU in the Big 10 East standings, regarded as the strongest of the two halves of the conference.

Marvin Harrison Jr. caught 11 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and Ohio State’s defense throttled Penn State all day as the Buckeyes remained undefeated with a 20-12 victory. Penn State was 1-16 on third down conversions and 1-3 on fourth down conversions.

Ohio State remained at #3 in the rankings, while Penn State dropped to #10. But OSU isn’t the highest ranking Big 10 school; that honor goes to 8-0 Michigan at #2. At this point, the Wolverines haven’t played any Top 25 ranked teams, but they’ve blown out everyone they have played. They’ve scored 325 points and allowed just 47 in those eight games. They will be at Penn State on November 11th, and will host Ohio State on November 25th. Michigan and Ohio State traditionally meet in their regular season finales, and often this game has huge implications for the conference championship and post season. It almost certainly will again this time around.
