Mikaela Shiffrin Wins Third Straight World Cup Overall Championship

There was a Women’s Super G World Cup Ski Race scheduled over the weekend of March 2nd, but the points leader in the World Cup wasn’t there. Mikaela Shiffrin decided to skip the event in Sochi, Russia, opting to train in Italy for races to be held in the Czech Republic March 8th and 9th.

That turned out to be a good decision, as the Super G in Sochi was cancelled due to bad weather, and the races will not be rescheduled. That meant that Shiffrin, who has won 14 of 29 races, clinched the overall World Cup title; she has a 719 point lead over second place Petra Vlhova of Slovakia, with 700 possible points left. Vlhova sat this one out too. It is her third consecutive overall World Cup title. The record is held by Austia’s Annemarie Moser-Proell, who won five in a row from 1971-75.

Shiffrin competes in slalom, giant slalom, and super G. If she wins a 15th race, she will own the record for most in a season. Since she didn’t race over the weekend, here’s a look at her slalom win at the World Championships earlier this season:
