Mets Rookie First Baseman Pete Alonzo Belts Home Run in Victory Over Yankees
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonzo hit a three run home run in the 1st inning of Game 2 of a doubleheader against the interleague and intercity rival Yankees on June 11th at Yankee Stadium to help the Mets to a 10-4 victory. The Yankees won Game 1 12-5.
Alonzo is enjoying a very good rookie season in the majors. In 66 games, the 24 year old ex University of Florida player has 22 homers and 49 RBIs, and is the club leader in both of those. His 22 homers are second in the league behind Milwaukee’s Christian Yellich, who has 25 through June 11th. He definitely has some pop in his bat; in 132 minor league games about evenly split between AA and AAA last season, Alonzo hit 36 homers with 119 RBIs while hitting .285. He’ll get strong consideration for a spot on the NL All Star team next month.
