Max Scherzer Reaches Pitching Milestone

Los Angeles Dodgers righthander Max Scherzer became the 19th major league pitcher to strike out 3000 batters on September 12th. In the process of doing so, he nearly made some additional history.

Scherzer entered the eighth inning in the game against the Sand Diego Padres with a perfect game going. He retired the first 22 Padres he faced before Eric Hosmer hit a one out double for the first hit and first runner to reach base. Scherzer pitched eight innings, allowing just that one hit before giving way in the ninth to reliever Justin Bruihl, who retired San Diego in order. The Dodgers won 8-0.

Scherzer is 14-4 with a 2.17 ERA and 219 strikeouts in 27 starts.
