Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews Scores Four Goals in NHL Debut

The 2016-17 National Hockey League Season got off to a memorable start on October 12th when Toronto’s Auston Matthews , the number one overall pick in this summer’s draft , did something that has never been done before. He scored four goals in his first game.

The 19 year old native was being counted on as an important part of the Maple Leafs’ never ending rebuilding process, now in about its 47th year or so. The Leafs played the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa to open the campaign. Matthews certainly did his part. His first three NHL shots on goal resulted in a hat trick, and he later added a record fourth goal. However, this being the Maple Leafs, no one else stepped up, and Ottawa tied the game, sending it into overtime. The Senators scored just 37 seconds into the overtime to win the game. Final score: Ottawa 5 Auston Matthews 4.

Matthews and the Maple Leafs will next be in action on October 15th when they will host the Boston Bruins. Reportedly, his jersey will be on sale by then. We predict brisk sales.

With two goals in the World Cup of Hockey, Matthews had a good warm up. There is no telling really who the best player on that North America team was, but he is amoung the considerations.
