Kenyan Runners Sweep 2022 Boston Marathon

The 2022 running of the Boston Marathon returned to its traditional Patriots Day after being held in the fall of 2021 and not being held at all in 2020 due to Covid-19. For the 23rd time since 1991, a runner from Kenya won the Men’s Division; and for the 14th time since 2000, a runner from Kenya won the Women’s Division.

Evans Chebet took the men’s title with a time of 2:06:51. This was his second Boston Marathon, and his first win (he did not finish in 2018). We’ll probably be hearing more from him—since 2019, he’s won four of his last five international marathons and finished fourth in the other in London last year–and the 2024 Paris Olympics are just two years away.

On the women’s side, Peres Jepchirchir outran Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh down the stretch to win her first Boston Marathon with a winning time of 2:21:01. Jepchirchir is on a roll. She won the Gold Medal in the Tokyo Olympics’ Marathon last year, as well as the 2021 New York Marathon.
