Kentucky Wallops Tennessee in Top 5 College Basketball Matchup

One of the more eagerly anticipated college basketball games in recent weeks has been a battle of Southeast Conference leader and #1 ranked Tennessee against traditional SEC powerhouse and #5 in the country Kentucky. The Volunteers went into the February 16th game in Lexington with a 23-1 record overall, an 11-1 conference mark, and a 19 game winning streak while the Wildcats were 20-4 and 9-2 in the SEC, but coming off a loss to LSU.

The Wildcats took a six point lead into the locker room at halftime and then built up a 62-38 lead by outscoring the Volunteers 25-7 early in the second half. Tennessee made a bit of a run, but Kentucky didn’t let the Volunteers seriously challenge as the Wildcats went on to an 86-69 victory. The Wildcats hit nearly 55% of their shots and outrebounded the Volunteers  39-26. P.J. Washington led the Wildcats with 23 points, Keldon Johnson scored 19, and Tyler Herro had a double double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

 
Tennessee is now tied with LSU in the SEC standings at 11-1, with Kentucky at 10-2. The Wildcats and Tennessee will play again in Knoxville on March 2nd.
