Jeopardy All Stars: Alex Jacob, Colby Burnett, Brad Rutter (2-20-19)

The 2019 Jeopardy! All Stars tournament kicked off today with only the first round of the game being played by 3 members from Team Buzzy, Team Colby and Team Brad.

After Alex Trebek explained the format of the tournament, he asked each Team Captain what winning this tournament meant to them. These are the responses from the captains of the teams playing today:

Colby Burnett: “It’s the feeling that you’ve outshone the best of the best”
Buzzy Cohen: “We’re gonna win this and I’m excited to finally put old Ken and Brad out to pasture”
Brad: “The team dynamic and everybody playing a role and just doing their best … that’s what I think is really cool about this, and also Buzzy’s a fraud.”

They showed the three teams playing today deciding who would play which round:

• Team Buzzy: Jeopardy: Alex Jacob; DJ: Buzzy Cohen; FJ: Jennifer Giles
• Team Colby: Jeopardy: Colby Burnett; DJ: Alan Lin; FJ: Pam Mueller
• Team Brad: Jeopardy: Brad Rutter; DJ: Larissa Kelly; FJ; Dave Madden

We then proceeded to today’s Jeopardy round with Alex Jacob, Colby Burnett and Brad Rutter:

Categories: Notorious – Recent Cinema – Open Your Pie Hole – “B”order Countries – Triple Rhyme Time – In Perpetuity

Brad got the Daily Double in “Notorious” under the $400 clue. There were 11 clues left after it– the whole $200 row and the rest of the $400 row. He was in second place with $3,200, $3,000 less than Alex’ lead. He made it a true Daily Double– of course! whoever got it would have done the same — and, of course, he was RIGHT.

Brad finished in the lead with $8,400. Alex was second with $6,600 and Colby was last with $3,200.

Colby did not answer with a question 3 times… what’s up?

  2. Jay Berrryl says:

    Horrible format. Never again!!

  3. Harry Stoffer says:

OK. I appreciate it they are trying to do something fresh and novel but the whole team tournament thing seems way too contrived for me. Are there any “Andy Griffith” reruns on any place at this time?

    • VJ says:

well, I don’t know what time Jeopardy! comes on where you are, Harry, but if it’s at 7 or 7:30 p.m., you might try ME TV for Andy Griffith

    • klm says:

Completely agree. Way too contrived and boring. I’m already pining for regular games.

  4. Albert says:

The players should form a union and insist on $100K just for showing up. If I had the honor of playing in that tournament I would not show up unless there was a minimum appearance fee. After all, boxers get their full purse even if they are knocked out in 30 seconds.

    • JP says:

I think if a person refused to show up without some large guaranteed minimum price money, the Jeopardy producers would move on to the next-most-prestigious contestant on their list of possible contestants, who would be happy to participate, so the original person would have thrown away whatever the actual minimum winnings is.

It really does look like all the contestants have prize money as a secondary concern, and are just happy to be there and have a chance to play the game they love, which I think is great.

  5. Phil Mott says:

Why did Colby not answer with a question format twice and not get penalized?

    • VJ says:

@Phil Mott, the one clue I noticed this on was the Butcher of Uganda clue and I replayed it and heard him say “who’s” real fast. But they don’t penalize the players for forgetting that in the Jeopardy! round anyhow. Only in Double Jeopardy!

  6. Diane Jeffer says:

Colby you are a wonderful and beautiful son to be so loving to your Mam

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Why are they always bouncing on the board?

    • JP says:

They are searching for the daily double(s). Hitting the daily doubles is an enormous competitive advantage not only because it gives you the possibility of pulling away from the other contestants, but also it removes the chance of the other contestants from hitting it and possibly doubling their own score. I think the best pick is almost always the remaining clue on the board that has the highest chance of being a daily double.

  8. Renée says:

    Gibraltar altar Vaulter?

    • VJ says:

yes, Renée, thanks. You’re right. I wasn’t following that category too well. I’ll fix it right now.

      • John B./I. says:

@VJ, Altar falter would be really “funny”….when asked “Do you take….bla bla…” and the bride or groom says “NO”..LOL My half brother did that at his (almost) second wedding……….he was kind of pressured by his “future” in-laws to marry and at the civil ceremony (he married in church the first time and being catholic that was it) he said…”I thought better of it, let’s go home…”😀

  9. Lou says:

Awesome play by the guys today. We will see what happens tomorrow with the second group of contestants from each team. I am rooting for Dave Madden. Also VJ and John who are you rooting for tomorrow?

    • VJ says:

I am rooting for Team Buzzy, Lou, although I most def would have put Alex Jacob in the Double Jeopardy round. What the heck, Buzzy?

      • JP says:

I was flabbergasted Alex won’t be in Double Jeopardy. He might be the best on the buzzer, the best in knowledge, and the most courageous in wagering (save Roger Craig, maybe). Maybe Buzzy was concerned he would blow everything on a Daily Double?

        • VJ says:

You and me both, JP! If we look back at the last game of the 2017 ToC, Buzzy was able to turn the game around in his favor with the second DD in the very last match. Alan Lin got the third DD wrong. Maybe Buzzy is thinking he can perform a similar feat tomorrow. I don’t have much faith in lightning striking in the same place twice.

Buzzy will be playing against Alan Lin again tomorrow. I can’t see how they could have known the other teams’ picks when choosing their own lineups. I just know that Alex Jacob would have been my automatic choice for the DJ round.

As it was, you’re right — lucky Brad. Alex would have went all in on that DD, too. Only if he was playing in the second round and someone else got one of the DDs, at least there would be a shot he would get the other one.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
I’m not watching, except for the 2 final games march 4/5.

  10. JP says:

I’m surprised they made the daily double so easy. That was a teen tournament level clue. Lucky for Brad.

    • VJ says:

Well, it was a $400 clue, JP. It would be an easy clue in just about any match. I really don’t like it when the DD shows up in the second row.

idk if the DD’s are randomly assigned, but in games like these where it is known that the players go from bottom to top, it always feels like they want them to have a decent amount to bet when they finally get to it.

My favorite is when the player hunts the DD right away and it’s in one of the bottom rows and then doesn’t even have the minimum when it’s found. Perverse, I know. LOL

      • JP says:

I think I remember reading sometime ago that the daily doubles are chosen by the writers after the board has been created in a non random way. My observations is that that tend to favor more academic categories (art, lit, history, geography, for example) compared to pop culture or word play. And the dollar values chosen are pretty consistent distributed, if you check the historical data on j-archive.

So they certainly could purposely put the clues towards the top in the situation you mentioned in order to boost possible wagers. I’d prefer that they use them on the very tough clues in these tournament games, as it adds a lot more to the drama as you likely get big wagers on tough questions.

    • Albert says:

I thought the board was mostly easy, except for the Triple Rhyme Time.

  11. Richard Corliss says:

Team Brad Rutter is in the lead. Larissa Kelly will have the lead tomorrow
Team Colby Burnett with $3,200 that means Alan Lin will select first in Double Jeopardy!.
Team Buzzy Cohen has $6,600. Which Buzzy will keep it and add the score tomorrow.
