WHAT IS “CASABLANCA”?

During WWII, the Allies launched Operation Torch on 11/8/1942, invading Vichy French-controlled Morocco and Algeria in North Africa, The French surrendered on 11/11/1942. Back in Hollywood, this news caused Warner Bros. to quickly release their completed film “Casablanca,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The film premiered in New York on Thanksgiving Day (11/26/1942) with a poster proclaiming “As exciting as the landing at Casablanca!” after a parade up Fifth Avenue of Free French leaders.

The film’s general release in Los Angeles in Jan. 1943 meant that it got an entry in the 16th Annual Academy Awards on 3/2/1944 when it won Best Picture. “Casablanca” is currently No. 3 on AFI’s 2007 list 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. It was No. 2 on the original 1998 list, but “The Godfather” demoted it.

Kurt came up with “Dunkirk.” He lost his $604 bet, leaving him with $1,996.

Melissa had “Paris.” She lost $3,000 and had $6,000 left.

Josh didn’t have a response. He didn’t have to bet anything but he did: $515. So he won the match with $26,885 and he has a 2-day total of $50,485.

You were thinking the Daily Double in the Jeopardy! round has more than one.

    • VJ says:

Looks like I did that because it was the last clue. Also I just fixed that ref in the recap to AFI’s Greatest Films. They redid that list in 2007 so, currently, “Casablanca” is No. 3.

  2. Alfred Robert Hogan says:

Upon seeing this super-easy clue I felt confident this would clearly be a Triple Get. How three JEOPARDY! contestants could be so utterly dumbfounded about this timeless acclaimed film classic CASABLANCA is quite baffling. We need to add cinematic literacy to our schools!

  3. John B. says:

Congrats to Josh for the runaway win, but boo hiss to all 3 players for having no clue about WW II. I wonder if the players even knew that WW II was also fought in Africa

Lets hope we have an easy Friday FJ.

  4. William Weyser says:

At least, I’m happy that the Carousel of 1-day champs is finally over, but still, I hate triple stumpers. Correct responses is all I care about, and I am not the only 1 who feels that way right now.

    • Dalton Higbee says:

      I hate triple stumpers, too.

      • William Weyser says:

Dalton, everybody hates them, including you & me.

        • John B. says:

And so do I. Who doesn’t really? And 2 days in a row.

        • Lou says:

Me.too but at least now we have a toc contender in Josh. This is the third time in a row that no one got final right. At least Josh was smart not to bet everything.

        • VJ says:

I predicted nobody would get it because I didn’t think the clue gave enough for anyone who never saw the film to latch on to it. It’s very funny how Alex Trebek is so sure that everyone has watched Casablanca more than once. Some people just think of it as a love story. Anyhow, perhaps one or more would have gotten it if they thought 1940s Oscar winners.

Right now I am watching The Mafia’s Most Wanted series because I discovered that it is a cure for insomnia. I fall asleep within 20 minutes of an hour episode.

I agree with you, VJ. I don’t think this clue was easy at all, even if you were familiar with the movie. There’s not enough in the clue to trigger the association between the movie and the liberation of this place.
