TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE VELVET REVOLUTION?

From fleur-de-coin.com: “The Velvet Revolution or Gentle Revolution (November 17 – December 29, 1989) was a non-violent revolution in Czechoslovakia that saw the overthrow of the communist government. The term was coined by Rita Klimova, the dissidents’ English translator who later became the new non-Communist regime’s ambassador to the United States. The term was used internationally to describe the revolution, although the Czech side also used the term internally.” They also show a 2009 euro over there that commemorated the 20th anniversary of the start of the Velvet Revolution.

How’s that? (a 2009 clue) ABSINTHE ($2000) A revival of absinthe-making in this country benefited from the 1989 “Velvet Revolution”

Ben got it right. He bet it all and doubled Team Julia’s score to $15,600. They had nothing to add from yesterday, so that was their 2-day total.

Roger had “who or what is Alex Trebek” with Trebek’s name in little blocks like a Wheel of Fortune puzzle and letters underneath it. Alex asked him if Austin put him up to that but he said it was his own idea and the first time he didn’t take Austin’s orders. He bet nothing so $13,600 plus $8,000 gave Team Austin a 2-day total of $21,600.

Matt got it right, too. He had the word “divorce” crossed out after it. He bet $538, so today’s $30,738 plus $40,003 from yesterday gave Team Ken $70,741 and the second spot in the Finals.

    Did Roger, Leonard, or Austin watched Wheel of Fortune as well?

  2. Albert says:

    Did Ken answer ‘Titian’ for an Art question? I’m not sure if I heard correctly.

    • JP says:

      Yes, but he didn’t pronounce it the way I have always said it in my mind. According to Wikipedia, he gave the Italian pronunciation of the artist’s name.

    • John B./I. says:

      In Europe they pronounce it TI ZI AN. (Germany,switzerland,Austria, Netherlands and all Slavic countries) The other pronunciation is TISHEN, primarily in English speaking countries.The original Italian one is TITSHJANO, since his name was originally spelled
      TIZIANO (Vecellio). One of those artists known by their first names (we just had Rembrandt and Michelangelo, while Leonardo da Vinci is usually referred to as only “da Vinci”).

      It was a joke, Albert — leaving many to wonder “is that how you really say it?” including Alex Jacob — See for yourself

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

    Roger Craig wagered nothing in FJ!, which eliminated Team Julia from the All-Star Games. If I have to choose who will that wildcard be, I would say Team Buzzy, and that’s what I’m rooting for. @John, @VJ, is “velvet divorce” also acceptable? Because Matt Jackson crossed divorce out in favor of the second word in the correct response.

    • VJ says:

      @John Christian, no, Velvet Divorce wasn’t going to work because it refers to when Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Check it out here

    • John B./I. says:

      @JCB
      No. “Velvet Revolution” is just as fix sa “Prague Spring” or “Tear this Wall down” or
      “Ich bin ein Berliner” etc…. and as VJ said, the divorce thing referred to the split onto the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It may mean the same – sort of – but the examples above are all carved in stone. Like the divorce. Just as ” Go ahead, make my day” LOL

  4. Lou says:

    So team Julia is eliminated. But still though they played valiantly. I loved roger’s response in final. Reminds me of what buzzy did in his initial run since this is the first time he taunted trebek. So funny I tell you. What sort of things happened during the velvet revolution John and VJ?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      Too long to explain. Basically it ended the one party – communist- rule in Czechoslovakia, but way before in 1968 Dubcek already was already easing things up, called the “Prague Spring”. As a result several Warsaw Pact countries including the USSR invaded Cz. to “restore order”. The “Velvet Revolution” was the transition from a communist to a free state in 1989, followed by free elections in 1990. Eventually the country peacefully split in two: the Czech Republic (capital PRAGUE) and Slovakia (capital BRATISLAVA). The elimination of communism happened in all the satellite states, in Romania they even shot the corrupt president Ceausescu and his wife who was even worse than him ….this “revolution ” happened in all East European countries,mainly towards the end of 1989, some drew more attention than others. Wikipedia has a very good article about it!! Lech Walesa was sort of a Polish “Dubcek”, but later. Interesting stuff how half a continent was freed when the USSR crumbled.

    I am drawing a blank here….crossword clues “V”. $ 800: 7 or 6 letters????
    Team Ken is in (they were already) and will win the whole schmier. Congratulations anyway !!
    Well done!

    • VJ says:

      There was a coincidence with today’s 2 years ago clue today– this was the $400 clue in DJ: The 1993 Cherbourg dispute was between Britain & France over fishing rights in & around this island group

      @John – maybe this will help

      • John B./I. says:

        Thanks, sometimes you don’t think of the closest, apparent word….

        • John B./I. says:

          Boy, and would I like to have a fraction of the money that is banked offshore in those islands….the Caribbean is peanuts compared to what goes on there…sort of independent, not really answering to any authority – the” administration” is rather murky to put it VERY mildly- and the U.K. is taking its share….$$$$$$$$$$ Just a few rocks, completely inconspicuous, no tourists except the one who come in with a lot of dough, on paper of course , the biggest Laundromat in the world……and no👮‍♂️
