Helio Castroneves Wins Record Tying Fourth Indianapolis 500

Helio Castroneves took the lead with two laps to go and held off Alex Palou to win the 2021 Indianapolis 500. Castroneves became the fourth driver to win four Indy 500s, joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears as the only four time winners of the race. The 46 year old Brazilian also won in 2001, 2002, and 2009.

Last year’s race was delayed until August and run in front on no fans due to Covid-19. This year’s race returned to Memorial Day weekend and was run in front of 135,000 fans, which is 40% capacity. This is the largest crowd to be present at a sporting event since before the pandemic as the nation edges it’s way back to normal.
