WHO IS MADELEINE ALBRIGHT?

Before Madeleine Albright became the first woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State in 1997, she spent the previous four years serving as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. In this video, Albright explains how Saddam Hussein inspired her to begin wearing brooches (“pins”) with specific designs to send a message. In that case, it was a snake. Her catchphrase “read my pins” was inspired by former President George H. W. Bush and is also the title of a book she wrote.

The Madeleine Albright Collection is online on the U.S. State Department website. The zebra pin she wore when meeting South African president Nelson Mandela is way cool.

Amanda thought it was former First Lady Rosalynn Carter (died 2023). She bet and lost her whole $4,000.

Rachel went with Shirley Temple (Black), a former child star and diplomat for many years (died 2014). Rachel lost $2,602 and finished with $5,398.

Adam got it right. He bet $5,401 and won the game with $16,001. Adam Reiffen is the first Jeopardy! champion in Season 41.

Well, what a way to start the new season! I, too, like my buddy Howard, thought it was quizzical they the woman from Seattle got her own state capital wrong.

Got any half the TS, including the French writer.

For FJ, my reflexive first response was Madeleine Albright, but I discounted it, and went with Rosalynn Carter. Oh well, the first of many!

VJ, I think you got the planet TS mixed up. The one listed, they got correct. The TS was the coldest planet.

  2. Howard says:

Hello to VJ and all the regulars here, hope you had a good rerun season.

Oh Amanda, will you ever live down not knowing the capital of your home state? At least you didn’t finish in the red and took home $2000 for your efforts.

Maybe I’m rusty, or just getting too old, but I struggled a lot tonight. I went with Shirley TB for Final. I did see Madeleine Albright up close and personal in 2017 when I attended a lecture about opioids while at my college reunion.
Did manage to come up with the Canterbury traveler (duh), French author, and the Nina Simone song (also the name of a Broadway musical long ago).

    • VJ says:

Hi Howard, yeah, that Canterbury miss was a real head scratcher. I got a chuckle out of your (duh) though.🤣

I think Amanda misunderstood the DD clue on Washington State, and thought they were looking for a city south of the state capital on Puget Sound.

      • Howard says:

True, it was a bit hazy, although Tacoma is north of Olympia. Also, “Geography 101” was a slight hint because US Hwy 101 runs right near Olympia but nowhere near Tacoma. I’m heading up that way next week to see my Yankees play twice.

Oh wow, a great game to start off the new season. . Well, I did above average in the game, and the FJ was a cinch.

  4. rhonda says:

Thanks so much for the YouTube video, VJ, I enjoyed it very much.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

I hope William Weyser will say darn those daily doubles to Amanda.

  6. VJ says:

My first thought was Shirley Temple but I knew her death was not recent. It’s interesting, though, that Shirley was Ambassador to Czechoslovakia for a while. Albright was born there and came to this country at age 11.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

What a way to start the new season. Adam led for most of the match, carries it through FJ! and becomes the first new champion of Season 41.
