Final Jeopardy: Composers (9-22-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/22/2023) in the category “Composers” was:

A fireworks display followed the April 27, 1749, premiere of a work by this man that had been commissioned by George II

In the final game of week two in the Second Chance Tournament the contestants are: Pam Sung ($16,200), a physician-scientist from Amherst, NY, Rob Kim ($3,400), an attorney from Portland, OR; and Deanna Bolio ($16,200), a community outreach supervisor from Campbell, CA. Just like last week, the amounts after their names will be added to today’s scores to determine the winner.

Pam found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Scotland” under the $1,000 clue on the 13th pick of the round. She was in last place with $600, $2,200 less than Rob’s lead. Pam bet the $1,000 allowance and guessed Robert the Bruce. That was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HANDEL?

King George II of England commissioned George Fridrich Handel to compose music for the Royal Fireworks that would celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession. Utah Symphony’s website says: “As a native of Germany and a scion of the royal house of Hanover, [George II] was England’s dog in a continental fight that ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, ensuring his place in the Hanoverian succession…. Appropriately enough, the music commissioned for the occasion was to be provided by England’s most eminent composer, Georg Frideric Handel, who occupied the position of Composer to the Royal Chapel. Like the king, Handel was a native of Germany who adopted England as his home.”

Oddly enough, as the rest of the story goes, the Music for the Royal Fireworks was the only thing about the whole celebration that was a great success.

Pam got it right. She bet $7,001, making today’s total $16,201. Yesterday’s $10,000 brought her up to $26,201.

Rob got it right, too. His $2,000 bet brought him up to $13,400 for today. He had $3,400 to add from yesterday so he finished with $16,800.

Deanna thought it was Haydn. She didn’t bet a shilling so today’s $12,400 plus yesterday’s $16,200 came to $28,600. That made Deanna Bolio the winner. In addition to $35,000, Deanna also won a spot in the upcoming Champions Wild Card tournament. Pam won $20,000 and Rob won $10,000.

Final Jeopardy (9/22/2023) Pam Sung, Rob Kim, Deanna Bolio

Still trying to decipher the FJ wagers, but so far I can tell that even if Pam and Rob had bet it all, they’d still have fallen short of the winner’s 2-day total.
But Rob lost 2nd-place money of $20K by not going for broke.

I didn’t associate Handel with fireworks. Only name I could muster was Elgar.

Those 4 missed rhymes were so easy. Can’t believe they all were stumpers.
Wasn’t certain of the bad student’s name, but I was correct.
Pretty sure the Danube flows nowhere near Ukraine. Probably was just a slip of the tongue.

The FJ was a shoo-in, but I didn’t do especially well otherwise during the course of the game.

Congrats to Deanna for winning Week 2 of Second Chance. Next week Second Chance continues with the next 9 returning players from Season 37.
