Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/19/2024) in the category “New York Movies” was:

Frank Sinatra got upset that a photo of him caught fire in a Brooklyn pizzeria in this film

New champ Chris Lindsay, an attorney from Carmel, CA, won $11,600 yesterday. In Game 2, his opponents are: Jen Feldman, a H.S. teacher from Brooklyn, NY; and Father Steve Jakubowski, a Catholic priest orig. from Grand Rapids, MI.

Jen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Birthstones” under the $600 with 9 clues left after it. She was in last place with $2,400, $3,000 less than Father Steve’s lead. Jen bet $600 and guessed Topaz. That was WRONG.

Jen finished in the lead with $9,800. Chris was second with $9,200 and Father Steve was last with $5,400. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “DO THE RIGHT THING”?

It’s a little hard to believe that Frank Sinatra was seriously upset that his picture caught fire on the Wall of Fame in Sal’s Pizzeria in “Do the Right Thing” (1989). For one thing, filmmaker Spike Lee himself claims that no one else on the Wall of Fame (Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, etc) was upset that the photos went up in flames. However, whether Ol’ Blue Eyes feigned offense or was serious, this anecdote has been making the rounds for a long time and there are various versions of it online.

In this Show Biz Cheatsheet version, Spike Lee says Sinatra refused to talk to him and he had to deal with Frank’s daughter Tina to get permission to use 3 songs in “Jungle Fever”. In other versions, Spike claims he had no idea Frank was upset with him until he called Tina about the rights.

Father Steve thought it was “Godfather II”. He lost $5,301 and finished with $99.

Chris got it right. His $1,601 bet brought him up to $10,801.

Jen also got it. She bet $4,000 and won the game with $13,800. Jen Feldman is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (9/19/2024) Chris Lindsay, Jen Feldman, Steve Jakubowski

Considering the rageful ass Sinatra was, I believe the story.

    • VJ says:

I believe it’s true, Esme, that Frank had a bad temper. I never was a big fan of his (I loved Dino!) but Frank was in his 70s when that movie came out. I thought he had mellowed by then.

Missed the show again. Got FJ pretty much because I remembered the film taking place at a pizzeria. Topaz rhymes with amethyst? Don’t think so. 2/3 DDS were not too bad, maybe all 3 if you knew the middle DD’s author.

The Folies Bergere is a hyphenated club? Not when I was there in 1971. It would have been my answer, though.
The link to Shakespeare’s epitaph was taken down, but I looked it up.
Stumpers really tough, knew the French one with “hand” in it.

Re FJ bets: my issue is with Jen, not Chris. The leader is more or less compelled to assume 2nd place will bet it all. Therefore, $9601+ IMO should have been her wager. Chris has to assume she will get it wrong and she has bet big. He wagered $1601 which “should” have been enough to pass Father Steve if he doubled to $10800 & pass Jen if she bets large. As it played out, Chris’s “smart” wager was too low, but only because Jen under-wagered. Maybe she deduced he’d bet small, who knows?

Although I didn’t see the show, I don’t see how someone with $5400 who loses it all on FJ deserves a second chance. I did way better than that.

    • VJ says:

I guess it’s just me but, imo, Chris bet that Jen would be wrong and Steve would be right, when he should have bet that he would be right. Also, I was hoping Chris would notice Jen’s low DD bet of $600 when she had over $2K. Because of that, I fully expected a low bet from Jen in FJ!

    • Jason says:

He was just charismatic, at least to my viewing. Yikes, sounds like I opened an old wound!

  3. Ismael Gomez says:

All 3 DDs were missed resulted our third skunking of the season. I hope William Weyser will say darn those daily doubles to the contestants today.

  4. VJ says:

It’s games like this where I wish I could slip second place a note. “You have to beat the leader🤞”

    • Jason says:

Too true, VJ. Just these nonsensical wagers make me wonder. I liked Father Steve – I wonder if he gets an invite for Second Chance.

Now, I don’t recall totally, but, Ken didn’t refer to David Sibley as Father, did he? David is “JV Catholic”, so, maybe that was it.

I got FJ wrong. I did say a Spike Lee film, but I said “Crooklyn”. Oh well!
