Final Jeopardy: Tech History (7-29-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/29/2022) in the category “Tech History” was:

New champ Katrina Hill, a non-profit professional from Alexandria, VA, won $27,601 yesterday. WHAT IS A LASER?

The above video traces the history of the laser (an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”). It begins in 1916 as a concept from Albert Einstein then jumps to 1960 for the invention of the Ruby laser and the Healy laser. It dates the laser’s first use in reading bar codes to 1975 (2:37); and gives 1998 (3:42) as the year that it was used for storing information on CD discs. Another article I saw on Laserchirp says the first commercial audio CD was a recording of Claudio Arrau performing Chopin Waltzes released in 1982, and, a year later, a CD of ABBA’s ‘The Visitors” became the first popular music CD made available to the public. (Don’t ask me why there are so many conflicting dates– I haven’t got a clue!)

It’s also odd that the video skips over all the research and developments that occurred in the 1940s and 1950s, but that is covered in “December 1958: Invention of the Laser” on APS.org.

Darin bet $2,994. He finished with $13,994.

Katrina bet $9,001 and she finished with $20,801.

Luigi bet $2,601 and won the game with $23,401. Luigi de Guzman is the new Jeopardy! champ who will be returning for the first game of Season 39!

All 3 made poor bets. If Luigi made the standard cover bet and missed, Darin didn’t bet enough to beat that total. Katrina didn’t bet enough to beat Darin had he doubled this total. And, as was mentioned by Kim, Luigi didn’t bet quite enough to win had Katrina doubled her score. Can you imagine the look on Luigi’s face had Katrina bet it all? We’ve already had one winner this week make that mistake when she bet enough to cover the 3rd place contestant but not the 2nd place one.

Dang. I came up with ‘scanner’ for FJ so perhaps I was wrong on that score.

Luigi de Guzman will see him again in Season 39 in September!! Still not a 2-day champion for Katrina. The contestant’s name Luigi reminds me of Super Mario Bros.

Season 38 was the best season with superchamps and streakers. I want to thank you VJ and Nikki for sharing the jeopardy recaps of this season it has been a fantastic ride. Looking forward to seeing season 39 in September. Congrats to the players on the triple solve.

I just noticed, Luigi’s bet was not smart at all. If Katrina had doubled up he would’ve lost. I was happy for him but now I’m not. Wagering incompetence is something I will not tolerate.

Ken’s wisecrack on French Phrases, $1200 clue, was funny and so spontaneous. In contrast, Mayim is wooden and her weak attempts at humor are so forced. Sadly, they haven’t done any end-of-season performance evaluation and are retaining her.

I have to say thanks to VJ and her family-team for such amazing updates throughout the season. And a special special thanks to VJ for mentioning some months ago the poem “Miniver Cheevy” in reference to a clue about the Medicis. I had neither heard of the poem or the poet but since then MC has become one of my favorite poems. I sometimes cough while having tea and quote, “Miniver coughed and called it fate, and kept on drinking.”

    • VJ says:

Thanks, klm, it’s nice to know that you like Miniver Cheevy. Richard Cory is another good poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson.

In one way, your comparison about Mayim is funny. She has been ruthlessly criticized for spontaneous remarks and spontaneous giggling (just shut up!) But of course, like various other things they both do, Ken gets a pat on the back.

On the other hand, you could have just said Ken’s remark was funny and left it at that. I am really tired of these negative Mayim comparisons because, in my view, they are unfair. I sincerely hope that I’m not going to see them next season (assuming I’m still hanging in there) and especially when we’re not even going to see Mayim on the regular show until January 2023.

Season 39 starts in September 12, 2022. What a season it has been with super champs. This has been the best season ever.
