Final Jeopardy: Movies About Movies (9-19-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/19/2014), in the category “Movies About Movies” was:

The title character of this 2013 film was played by David Tomlinson, who was actually seen only in clips from a 1964 film.

Current champ Bill Cossen has racked up a 3-day total of $50,602 in the first week of Season 31. Today he is up against: Stephanie Bilyeu, from Champaign, IL; and Matthew Price, from East Providence, RI.

Round 1: Bill found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Date Nut” under the $800 clue with one clue left in the same category after this. He was in third place with $600, $3,800 less than Matthew’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT. (And he got the last clue too).

It’s opening on July 27, 2012 was watched by an estimated 900 million people. show

Matthew finished in the lead with $5,400. Stephanie was second with $2,800 and Bill was last with $2,600.

Round 2: Matthew found the first Daily Double in “Music Terms” under the $1,200 clue. He was in the lead with $10,600, $2,000 more than Bill in second place. He bet $1,400 and guessed “carol”. That was WRONG.

Stephanie found the last Daily Double in “Fill in the Shakespeare Quote” under the $1,200 clue. She was in third place with $4,400, $7,000 behind Bill’s lead. It was only the third clue she got in the whole round so she decided to make the most of it. She bet it all and she was RIGHT.

“Two households both alike in dignity, in fair _____ where we lay our scene.” show

And right after that, time ran out. Bill finished in the lead with $11,400. Matthew was right behind him with $11,200 and Stephanie was back in the thick of it with $8,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “SAVING MR. BANKS”?

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson starred as Walt Disney and P.L. Travers in this 2013 film about the making of “Mary Poppins”. In the 1964 film, Mr. Banks (played by David Tomlinson) turns out to represent P.L. Travers’ real father (Travers Goff played by Colin Farrell) and the way he will be portrayed in the Disney project is a large part of the conflict between Disney and Travers. (IMDB: Saving Mr. Banks Trivia)

Stephanie got it. Her $8,000 bet brought her up to $16,800.

Matthew got it too. He bet all his tuppence and finished with $22,800.

Bill just had a question mark. He lost his $11,001 bet and finished with $399.

It was quite a game with a false start for Bill but an admirable catch up and good fight. Kudos to Stephanie as well for not giving up and getting right back in there!

New Jeopardy! champ: 9-19-14

And of course, a hearty congratulations to Matthew Price, our new champ, who is a higher education administrator. During the chat, he talked about his summer job with the Pawtucket Red Sox when he was a kid. Matthew kinda struck out as a bat boy after two days and ended up selling hot dogs and washing uniforms for the rest of the summer.

Good pick — Matthew’s a good player – hoping he’s a buzzsaw next week! I like a game like this where the players who get a setback don’t give up.
