WHAT IS “A WHOLE NEW WORLD”?

According to an April 2022 Billboard article by Andrew Unterberger, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from “Encanto” became the first No. 1 song from an animated Disney film since “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” hit No. 1 in 1993. The “Bruno” number, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is an ensemble song, credited to Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast. “A Whole New World” is a duet performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle.

There’s a list of Billboard’s 30 Greatest of All Time Disney songs at the bottom of the article, that for some reason ranks the Aladdin song at No. 3. Here are the Top 5:

1. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, Encanto (No. 1, 2022)
2. “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” The Lion King (No. 4, 1994)
3. “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme),” Aladdin (No. 1, 1993)
4. “Let It Go,” Frozen (No. 5, 2014)
5. “Colors of the Wind,” Pocahontas (No. 4, 1995)

Melissa thought it was “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King.” She lost her $2,799 bet and finished with $1.00.

Emmett got it right. He bet $10,000 and finished with $25,800.

Luigi got it right, too. He bet $1,551 and finished with $19,551. That made a very surprised Emmett Stanton the new Jeopardy! champ.

The FJ clue included that the song in question was a duet. That’s why the Aladdin song is #3, behind the Lion King song. The song from the Lion King was not a duet; it was sung solo by Elton John.

  2. Howard says:

Emmett’s $10K wager was understandable; he would lock out Melissa if he missed FJ and she bet it all and got it right. But Luigi’s wager is a head-scratcher.

Yeah, that’s what I thought, too (like others). That was an unforced error on his part. I wonder if that was tactical, though – got his TOC spot, so, figured it was enough? Otherwise, I am having a hard time putting a happy face on that wager.

It was particularly astonishing in light of how Luigi won Tuesday’s game! But Luigi did seem tired, having a few brain farts here and there. Congrats to Emmett though. He knows a lot of stuff, too.

I got a kick out of the Waluigi reference. I bought my grandson, Jax, a Waluigi plush toy last month. On the day of delivery, Jax was up early, waiting at the door but I told him it wasn’t coming until later. After that, Nikki came by and asked me if she could have a dollar for every time Jax said “Waluigi” until it came. 🤣🤣

Luigi is now in the contestants’ Facebook group. He commented the other night that he was “kinda exhausted/delirious” that Friday show. But he was also very gracious and congratulated Emmett for playing a strong game.

  3. Collin says:

Luigi is in the lead before Final Jeopardy but Luigi did not bet enough to be a 6-day champion.

  4. Lou says:

Luigi made an impressive run for five games for the start of season 39. And a big congrats to Emmett winning today.

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

For the second time this week, the leader going into FJ! got the final right but did not wager to cover second place contestant all-in score. It happened earlier this week and it happened again today. After what happened to one of Luigi’s opponents earlier this week I wasn’t surprised it happen to Luigi today but still he became our first streaker of Season 39.
