Final Jeopardy: 2001 News (8-4-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/3/2020) in the category “2001 News” was:

In 2001 the zinc industry was up in arms over Rep. Jim Kolbe’s bill calling for the phasing out of these

Today we’re watching a rerun of the second quarter-final of the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament that originally aired on 5/2/2002 and featured: Claudia Perry, a sports copy editor from Jersey City, NJ; Brad Rutter, a network administrator from Lancaster, PA; and Kate Waits, a law professor at the University of Tulsa from Tulsa, OK

Brad finished in the lead with $17,800. Claudia was next with $12,400 and Kate was in third place with $4,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE PENNIES?

The particular bill the clue was referring to back then was the Legal Tender Modernization Act of 2001. It was not Rep. Jim Kolbe’s first effort to eliminate the penny, as you can see in Wikipedia’s article, Penny Debate in the United States. Since 1982, the penny has contained 97.5% zinc so, of course, the zinc industry continues to be unhappy with the prospect.

The penny may die someday but songs like “Pennies from Heaven” never will. (This rendition is by Louis Prima from 1957)

Kate crossed out subsidies and went with batteries. She bet and lost it all.

Claudia got it right. She added $5,000 and finished with $17,400.

Brad got it, too. He bet $7,001 and won the semi-finalist spot with $24,801.

Claudia first appeared on 9/11/1996 after the beginning of the 14th season, they had technical problems with the signaling buttons and that disadvantaged her. So they brought her back on 1/2/1997. Her sister Kathryn was also on the show too.

Thanks for the Pennies from Heaven video. Never heard that particular version but it’s very catchy and I really liked it.

You’re welcome, kassidy. It’s so catchy my 5-year old granddaughter stopped playing with her toys and started dancing when I played it. 😄 And her mom said she recognized the voice of King Louie from “The Jungle Book”

Well at least all the daily doubles are nailed. Although I would have loved to see Kate get this as well but I don’t think she will get the wild card spot. Speaking of pennies. There was a game called penny ante on the price is right VJ. And there was a band called pennywise and jcpenny. All have the word penny in them
