Final Jeopardy: The Eastern U.S. (7-4-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/4/2022) in the category “The Eastern U.S.” was:

At its peak, this state had 6 seats in the House of Representatives; since the 1930s, it has had just 1

New champ Eleanor Dixon, a freelance technical editor from Vero Beach, FL won $20,818 last Friday. In Game 2, she is up against: Yungsheng Wang, a Public Defender from Los Angeles, CA; and Andie Huskie, an educator from Geneva, NY.

Happy Independence Day to all those celebrating!

Round 1 Categories: Orchestral Instruments – Name the Automaker – TV – Silent Consonant Words – Tunnels – Bye, George

Yungsheng found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “TV” under the $800 clue on the eighth pick of the round. He was tied for the lead with Andie at $1,000, $800 more than Eleanor. Yungsheng made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

”The Greenlanders” & “The Last Daughter of Uppsala” are episodes of the drama called these people: “Valhalla” show

Yungsheng finished in the lead with $6,600. Andie was second with $4,400 and Eleanor was last with $2,600. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Non-Orchestral Instruments – Starts with “Au” – It’s Kind of a Funny Story – Medical Adjectives – Old Movies – The Power of the Doge

Andie found the first Daily Double in “Medical Adjectives” under the $1,600 clue on the 17th pick. Andie was in the lead with $13,200 now, $2,200 more than Yungsheng in second place. Andie bet $3,000 and took a shot at it with superficial. That was WRONG.

Eleanor got the last Daily Double in “Non-Orchestral Instruments” under the $1,600 clue, with 2 clues left after it. In last place with $7,800, she had $4,000 less than Yungsheng’s lead when she found it. Andie benefited from a reversal at this point (see below)) and she took over the lead. Eleanor bet $2,016, and said thermometer. That was WRONG.

Andie finished in the lead with $12,200. Yungsheng was next with $11,800 and Eleanor was in third place with $5,784. All clues were shown.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS VERMONT?

Vermont was admitted to the Union in 1791 when 2 men were elected to the U.S. House of Representatives based upon the first census in 1790. Vermont’s population reached its peak by the third census in 1810. Thereafter, the number of representatives sent to Congress slowly dwindled back down to 2 by 1880 and stayed there until 1930. After Congress passed the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 and adopted a new formula for determining the number of representatives per state, Vermont dropped down to one, where it has stayed ever since regardless of other formula changes.

Only six other states have one representative: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Eleanor thought it was Rhode Island. She lost her $3,799 bet and finished with $1,985.

Yungsheng got it right. He bet $11,000 and that brought him up to $22,800.

Andie went with Delaware. She lost everything but $1.00 and that made Yungsheng Wang the new Jeopardy! champ and a very enthusiastic champ, I must say. Yungsheng jumped up and down and whooped and hollered. I can’t recall a happier Jeopardy! champion in the whole 11 years I’ve been recapping the show.

Final Jeopardy (7/4/2022) Eleanor Dixon, Yungsheng Wang, Andie Huskie

Reversal: MEDICAL ADJECTIVES ($2000) From a Latin word for “to cloak”, it’s the type of care given to seriously ill patients to provide comfort without curing – Yungsheng missed the boat with “hospice”; Andie said “pallative” then corrected that to “palliative” just a little before Mayim ruled him wrong. The tape told the judges that she should get $4,000. Andie was awarded that amount when Eleanor landed on the last Daily Double and it put Andie in the lead with $12,200. Eleanor got the DD wrong and the last two clues were triple stumpers so Andie still held the lead at the end of the round.

A triple stumper from each round:

TV ($1000) Not only did she star in “Better Things”, she wrote & directed many of its episodes (image)

IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY ($1200) Sloan Crosley’s collection of humorous narratives of life in NYC has the tasty title “I was Told There’d be” this treat

Smart group tonight, but 2nd round was kind of erratic. The guys were super-quick on the buzzer, but Eleanor hung in there and was a contender at the end. Andie’s right thumb quivered the entire show except during the DD.

A wee bit surprised no one knew the Canadian city across from Detroit. As far as I know, it’s the only place where Canada is south of the US. And there are now 3 confirmed people who have never seen that famous clip of Harold Lloyd dangling.

Vacillated between RI and Delaware for FJ and went with the latter. Thought it might have been that first state in the Union. Most winners do nothing more than crack a smile. Tonight was the rare exception.

There’s a lot (relatively speaking) of the mainland US that is north of Canada. It’s because of how Ontario goes south of the, what is it, 49th parallel?

      I went with Delaware, also.

I also chuckled at Yungsheng when he was rather dramatic at an earlier clue. As said, it’s refreshing when someone shows their happiness, instead of appearing restrained. I hope he has the chops for a long run.

Thanks for the recap, since FJ was pre-empted in my area.

  3. Collin says:

Yungsheng got the daily double and final Jeopardy correctly to get a new champion.

I loved Yungsheng Wang’s reaction to winning with $22,800.
