Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/24/2019) in the category “Children’s Authors” was:

This author & illustrator who won the 1964 Caldecott Medal was dubbed the “Picasso of Children’s Books”

3x champ Jason Zuffranieri, a math teacher from Albuquerque, NM, has now won $75,300. In Game 4, his challengers are: Michelle Bruck, an attorney from Levittown, PA; and Corin Purifoy, a fiber artist from Milwaukee, WI.

Jason finished in the lead with $18,400. Corin was next with $14,200 and Michelle was in third place with $3,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MAURICE SENDAK?

Maurice Sendak won the 1964 Caldecott Award for “Where the Wild Things Are.” However, it was in 1962 that he was dubbed “The Picasso of children’s books” in a review of Sendak’s “The Nutshell Collection.” Sendak was 34 years old at the time and had already illustrated some 50 children’s books for other authors, most notably, the “Little Bear” series.

Upon his 5/8/2012 passing, March of Time Books published a tribute to Maurice Sendak with some of their favorite illustrations.

Michelle thought it was Eric Carle (minus the first name and “e”). She didn’t bet anything so she remained at $3,000.

Corin also thought it was Carle. That cost her $8,100 and left her $6,100.

Jason got it right. He bet $11,600 to win the game with an even $30,000. His 4-day total is $105,300.

Fun fact- Michelle is my coworker – has a law license but works as a paralegal by choice (don’t ask me why)

The reruns are in this order: 2018 Teen Tournament, Teachers Tournament, All-Star Games.

There’s only two more games left until the Season Finale. Congrats to Jason, a 4 day champion with $105,300.

    • AD says:

And then reruns of the 2018 Teen Tournament, Teachers Tournament and All-Star Games.

      • John Christian Ambion says:

@AD Which means that Season 36 will premiere on September 3, PST. BUT, can he become the last 5-time champion of the season? He must avoid the 4-day curse or he’s square.

        • AD says:

If he wins today and tomorrow’s games, he can become a 6-time champion and then come back next season on September 9th, 2019.

Mon, Sep 9 is the season premiere for WOF and Jeopardy. I believe the Teens kick off the Summer reruns, than the Teachers and All Star Games in some order follow those over the next six weeks.

Although that true daily double didn’t work out for Jason he still came out on top today. Michelle couldn’t get much going. Also this book where the wild things are was my favorite childhood story by Maurice Sendak. Congratulations to Jason on getting to 100K. VJ you must have read this to the kids when they were little right? How did the ladies miss this?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I was almost a teenager when that book came out and it wasn’t in my repertoire by the time I had children. On the other hand, I have read Eric Carle’s Hungry Hungry Caterpillar to my granddaughter and, when she was 2, played the Hungry Caterpillar game with her on her Kids Kindle, where you feed it all kinds of stuff. I had a lot of fun grabbing her Kindle and saying “MY TURN!!!” lol

@Lou I think that they chose the obvious, but it’s wrong because it’s in 1969. I guess the ladies picked the wrong year.
