Final Jeopardy: French Phrases (7-23-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/23/2018) in the category “French Phrases” was:

Paramnesia is another term for this French-named phenomenon– sound familiar?

New champ Dave Mattingly, a director of technology from Pennsylvania, ran away with Friday’s game and won $26,200. In his second game, his challengers are: Hollie Schmidt, a medical researcher from Massachusetts; and Neel Koltra, an environmental engineer & consultant from Florida.

Neel found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “History Will Note” under the $800 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He had $1,000 and was the only one with any dough. He went with a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Neel finished in the lead with $7,200. Hollie was second with $4,200 and Dave was last with $3,600.

Round 2 Categories: Literary Title References – Hit the Beaches – Before & After People – “Pin”-terest – Director Cameos – The 1917 Silent Parade

Dave found the first Daily Double in “Hit the Beaches” under the $1,200 clue on the 16th pick. He was in a tie for the lead with Neel. They both had $11,200 at this point, $2,600 more than Hollie in second place. He bet $4,000 and guessed copperheads. That was WRONG.

3 clues later, Dave landed on the last Daily Double in “Literary Title References” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $9,200 now, $1,200 less than Neel’s lead. He bet $5,000 this time and he was RIGHT.

Dave made it a runaway on the very last clue, finishing with $22,600. Neel was next with $11,200 and Hollie was in third place with $5,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right, to the surprise of no one.

WHAT IS DÉJÀ VU?

From FluentU: “‘Already seen,’ is the English translation of the French phrase with which we associate that weird feeling of reliving the same past experience. In France you’ll hear this word on a daily basis, because it’s used to express “having re-seen” a person, place or things, not in another life or dimension. In other words, it’s a factual encounter. The French do too believe in the weird phenomenon … but have a different way of spelling it (with a hyphen), déjà-vu.” They go on to give you examples of the 2 different usages and 14 other French words or phrases that are commonly used in English.

The Free Dictionary has a collection of definitions from medical dictionaries for paramnesia, some of which mention déjà-vu, but most say it involves confusing reality and fantasy.

Hollie bet $4,995, bringing her up to $9,995.

Neel bet a mere $350, finishing with $11,550.

Just like last Friday, Dave didn’t bet anything and won the match with the “tidy sum” of $22,600. His 2-day total is $48,800.

It wasn’t déjà-vu, when Beyoncé Knowles the member of Destiny’s Child sang with Jay-Z on the 2006 song Déjà-Vu.

At least everyone got it right, but Dave’s wagering of 0 on Friday and today won him $48,800. Both of them are runaway games, but as Alex said, next week is the replay of Jeopardy ToC 2017, as well as the College Championship and Teachers’ Tournament 2018, so he has four more days to prepare.

    @VJ & JJ
    Congratulations for the right prediction!
Way to go David! Too bad he missed the DD, otherwise he would have cleaned up 30.600….
One more win like that and he is #10 to #12 on the ToC list.

At least everyone got final right. Although hollie barely had a chance to get momentum, this Deja vu feeling, Dave is playing like Seth Wilson all of a sudden and inherited Arthur chu’s betting strategy, right VJ? He started out slow but managed to gain ground in the second round. Congrats to Dave. By the way have anyone here experienced deja vu feelings from something unpleasant in the past? Like seeing the same roads closed down for hours, or downed trees?

idk, Lou, the clues interest me much more than the betting strategies. Couldn’t believe they didn’t get the quahog clue today. I only knew that California beach town clue because the answer was the nephew of the poet who wrote “Beautiful Hands,” a much beloved tribute to mothers. I did a lot of research on her and her family when the poem was frequently being attributed to the wrong person.
