The Final Jeopardy question (3/8/2016) in the category “The Western Hemisphere” was:

2 U.S. state capitals & 2 major Panamanian ports are named after this European.

New champ Brent Povis won $24,789 yesterday. Today he faces these two challengers: Annie Moriondo, from Somerville, MA; and Paul Hoan Zeidler, from Los Angeles, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Traveling along Route 66 – Playboy – TV is Really Cooking – Literary Last Names – 2015 Congress Folk – Alphabetic Homophones

Brent found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Route 66” under the $800 clue, the first one chosen in that category. He had just emerged from the hole and had $600, $3,600 less than Annie’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it was “How the West Was Won.” That was WRONG.

WHO IS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS?

Most online lists of places named after Christopher Columbus only cover his last name. Columbus Monument Pages even has a big breakdown by Colombia, Colón, Columbia and Columbus. Columbus, OH, Columbia, SC and Colón, Panama are on there. The Panamanian seaport Cristóbal is the other place named after Columbus in the clue. Colón and Cristóbal are both in the province of Colón.

Paul bet $500 bet. He finished with $7,300.

Brent bet $6,401. That brought him up to $13,601.

Annie already had the game in the bag but she bet $7,700 anyway. She became the new Jeopardy! champ and won $22,300.

Columbus question was way too easy.

43/54. Annie had a little guts risking her lock but it paid off.

  3. Chri says:

But what about Annie’s reckless / foolish bet on FJ?

    • VJ says:

idk, I guess it depends on how you look at it. Maybe she was very confident with the category. I was just having a discussion with my son about this on the State Capitals game last week when John made a $500 wager and turned out to be the only one who knew FJ but Rachel still won the game.

There are just some categories I would bet big on myself and State Capitals is one of them. Of course, there is the possibility that they would ask me the one thing I don’t know (just kidding), but I still wouldn’t go home and beat up my pillow over it or get mad about the online comments on my terrible bet. hee hee hee.

idk if I would risk a runaway but given my math skills, I probably wouldn’t even know I had one unless Alex said “VJ couldn’t be caught.”

Did anyone else think of Cliff Clavin?

  5. rhonda says:

2/3 of the first segment were pre-empted here in NYC due to “breaking news” that could have waited until the regular news. So frustrating, I missed the entire Literary Last Names category, any chance anyone can help out with the clues?

    • VJ says:

Sure, Rhonda. This was the first category they went through in the game and they did it in this order:

$600 – “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”: Becky (Brent)
$800 – The Count of Monte Cristo”: Edmond (Annie. Brent was wrong with Dumas)
$400 – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”: Luna (Annie)
$200 – “The Godfather”: Sonny (Paul)
$1000 – “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”: Mikael (Annie)

Annie had $2,200 at the end of it. Paul had $200 and Brent was minus $200.

    Congrats Annie!

Happy International Women’s Day VJ, Rhonda, Marilyn, Cece, Leena, and all women who post on FF.

    • VJ says:

Thanks Jacob 🙂 Annie is one cool customer, isn’t she? LOL! I had two big Brent moments watching this game. One when he was doing so well in Classical composers and all of a sudden went up to the $400 clue. I was like WHY?? Then she found her DD thanks to that maneuver. And on the second DD, I was saying Just say Wood, Brent. Say Wood Brent. Say Brent Wood. LOL!!

    • rhonda says:

      Thanks, Jacob!

    • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

      Thanks, Jacob.

    • Cece says:

Thanks, Jacob. When is International Men’s day? Or you guys don’t deserve one, lol?

What the hell was with that wager? The Western Hemisphere is too broad a category for Annie to feel that confident. Smh…

      • jacob ska says:

International Men’s Day is November 19th of each year, CeCe. Everybody gets a day at some point. Even yesterday was National Pancake Day. :):) So see you don’t have to be a person to get a day. lol. Annie’s fj wager shocked me too. Don’t know what she was thinking.
