WHAT IS “YOU CAN CALL ME AL”?

The Washington Post has an article on the various balls going on in D.C. on 1/20/1993. It mentions Paul Simon making a “surprise appearance” at 11:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Inaugural Ball held at the Washington Hilton. Simon sang “You Can Call Me Al”, his No. 23 hit from 1986 as the new Vice President Al Gore danced across the stage with his wife, Tipper.

Other artists who performed at the Tennessee Inaugural Ball included Jimmy Buffet, Kathy Mattea, Rosanne Cash, Lou Reed and the Dixie Chicks (now known as the Chicks)

Emmie drew a blank. She lost her $4,000 bet and finished with $1,800.

Gunan came up with “Walking in Memphis”, a 1991 hit by Marc Cohn. That cost Gunan $4,001 and left him with $3,599.

Karla went for Paul Simon’s 1972 hit “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard”. She only lost $1,000, winning the game with the remaining $16,600. Karla Fossett is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I was surprised no one knew who wrote Vanity Fair, also surprised that no one knew the Redford-Streisand song.

I was surprised at more than a few of those stumpers. Like the Northern snakes in the grass and the New Jersey Catholic university.

Mostly I was surprised that anyone would spend 5000 dollars or more on a Yubari King.

    • Howard says:

Yes, what I was about to say. I was surprised Vanity Fair was a $2K clue, and doubly surprised no one knew it. The Hamlisch song wasn’t too hard to get, and the “Mad About You” Emmy winner is a comedy legend.

I was sure FJ answer was Graceland and never gave it a 2nd thought. Oops…But the category and the year were big hints.

A triple stumper, and as if anyone was supposed to have recalled what Paul Simon had sung at the 1993 Tennessee Inaugural Ball, and not even a hit song at that.

    • Linaf says:

Ouch! It was a pretty decent hit hitting 23 on the charts and part of his Grammy win for Album of the Year. Not sure I’d say it wasn’t a hit, or forgettable given how much it gets played on classic rock stations even today. I was pained that only one of the three came up with a Paul Simon song, but that’s just how it goes; not everyone has the same knowledge base as another.
Ironically, when I read the clue, my mind instantly went to the title track for that album, Graceland. It all made so much sense to me: Graceland -> Memphis -> Tennessee. It was one of those foolish moments where you’re so certain you hit it in the first try you don’t even start to consider other possibilities. But, again, ah well.

      • Jason says:

That was exactly the same for me. I thought, “Graceland, duh?” I was fixed on that idea.

    • VJ says:

Yes! That was a very popular song. Even my parents (who were born in the 1920s) liked it.

Still, the Inaugural Ball was 7 years after the song made its debut. I wonder how many of them would have gotten FJ! if the clue just wanted to know the name of the Tennessee person the ball was for. That is, did anyone connect it to the new VP and just not know Simon’s “Al” song?

P.S. My son called me from NJ to let me know he got it!

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

We ended the week with a triple stumper but we are now only a week away until the Season 38 finale of Jeopardy!

  4. VJ says:

I think it’s safe to say that the low amount of Triple Stumpers in the last two games was thanks to Matt. Too bad the Daily Doubles did him in!

$11,200 in Triple Stumpers, including the missed Alcott DD, and a correct FJ! means winning the game from the fourth podium
