Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Novels (7-2-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/2/2018) in the category “20th Century Novels” was:

In a 1989 novel, Jing-mei Woo says, “my father has asked me to be the fourth corner” in this title group

3x champ Scott McFadden, a librarian from Indiana, won $78,401 last week. It’s Game 4 for him and Game 1 for these two players: Adam Scholze, a tutor from California; and Suzanne Koppelman, a museum education manager from New York.

Alex Trebek was in rare form today. He opened the show with his oft-used line on how he loves spending time with bright people. When the players racked up their 5th triple stumper on the 10th clue, he quipped “Ladies and gentlemen, please forget what I said at the beginning of the show.”

Round 1 Categories: Danish Food & Drink – Government ABCs – Small-Screen Crime Fighters – Born & Died – Book of the Month – Anagram Pairs

Suzanne found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Born & Died” under the $600 clue on the 17th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $1,000, $1,200 more than Adam in second place at negative $200. She bet it all and she was RIGHT.

Suzanne found the first Daily Double in “Communication” under the $2,000 clue, with 9 clues to go after it. She was in the lead in a big way with $14,400 now, $10,400 more than Adam in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

There’s no such thing as a native speaker of this, a word found before “English” for a mix of a colonizing & local language. show

Scott found the last Daily Double in “American History” under the $1,600 clue. There were only 4 clues left after it now. In second place with $5,200, he had $13,200 less than Suzanne’s lead. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

Suzanne finished in the lead with $16,200. Scott was next with $12,200 and Adam was in third place with $6,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE JOY LUCK CLUB”?

Amy Tan’s 1989 novel starts out with the line in the clue and in the next sentence, Jing-mei Woo explains that she will be taking her deceased mother’s place at the mah jong table at the Joy Luck Club. The book was a New York Times Bestseller. In a 2008 interview, Ms. Tan related that when she told her mother it had reached No. 4, her mother said: “Wha’ happened? Who’s No. 3 and 2 and 1?”

“The Joy Luck Club” was made into a film in 1993. Amy Tan co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bass. The film was nominated for several awards and won a National Review Board award for Top Ten films of 1993.

Adam bet $5,995. That brought him up to $11,995.

Scott bet $4,001 bet. He finished with $16,201.

Suzanne bet $8,201 so she won the match with $24,401. Suzanne Koppelman is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Did anyone else notice that the contestant Suzanne K. did not answer in the form of a question when she answered with “the fireside chats”? Just curious.

    • VJ says:

hi Deanna, the closed caption has her saying “What’s the fireside chats?” My ears (with my eyes closed) heard the tail end of the “what’s” 🙂

  2. Richard Corliss says:

Has anyone watched Ferdinand or Coco?

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

We have a 3-time champion being dethroned by possibly another, if she continues her performance. I thought Suzanne will get a runaway, but Scott closed her in until FJ when Scott risked $4201. If he would’ve risked it all, he would’ve continued his streak, but Suzanne stopped him otherwise.

    • John B./I. says:

      @ John Christian

If Scott had bet it all and ended up with 24.400, Suzanne would still have won by a buck.

  4. Louis says:

Well glad everyone got final right. I was laughing when Alex said about spending time with bright people but it turns out the contestants themselves had trouble getting in rhythm today. VJ, you heard of Ming Na, the Chinese actress on various tv shows like ER, agents of Shield and so forth? She was in the joy luck club the movie based on the book. When was the last time you saw that movie?

I sincerely hope we get a four time winner hopefully in Suzanne or maybe that woman from Ohio this week.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

Louis, I heard of “The Joy Luck Club”, but I never read it.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I don’t remember exactly the last time I saw that movie, over 10 years ago in any event. One of the things that still sticks in my mind from that film was the husband of one of the other daughters making her pay for half the ice cream even though she never ate any.

I hope someone on here is gonna tell me they got the Louis Prima clue. It always upsets me when the players don’t know him!

Congratulations to Suzanne, our new champion, we shall see how many wins she can string together.
    @Doris
