WHAT IS GUERNICA?
On April 26, 1937, German planes bombed Guernica, the ancient Basque capital and the center of Basque culture. According to pablopicasso.org, Picasso was working on a mural for the 1937 Paris International Expo commissioned by the Spanish Republican government. They make it sound like it was Picasso’s idea to depict the horrific aftermath of the attack on Guernica. The painting was unveiled at the Expo that summer however, “it garnered little attention. It would later attain its power as such a potent symbol of the destruction of war on innocent lives.” Indeed, the Warfare History Network’s article on the Expo doesn’t even mention Guernica, discussing instead the German and Soviet pavilions.
FJ! from 10/22/2020: 20th Century Art: In occupied Paris, a German officer asked Picasso if he had done this masterpiece; he replied, “No, you did”
Liz thought it might be Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase. It’s just as well it wasn’t as she only got two words out and “Woman” was wrong. Liz lost $2,801 and finished with $9,399.
Sean got it right. He bet $3,000 and finished with $10,000.
David also got it right. He bet $9,401 and won the game with $24,401. David’s 2-day total is $52,802.
A triple stumper from each round:
FASHION OLD & NEW ($1000) A 1914 ad said this piece of outerwear was “made of a hard khaki… lined sheepskin” & “absolutely waterproof”
HISTORY ($2000) A recent exhumation of this eccentric 16th century Danish astronomer found his prosthetic nose was more likely brass than gold

Maybe you have to be of a certain age, but I thought the artist with all the Post cover art was pretty well known.
Somehow “1937” led me right to the FJ answer. Unfortunately all the stumpers got me too.
My wife, the artist, got FJ. I said “The Persistence of Vision”, by Dali. What’s funny is, my wife got the Duchamp reference, even though, as you say VJ, she only got two words out.
Did anyone have a very short cut to commercial for Ken at the mid point of the J! round, and at the end of the J! round? I didn’t know if that was national or local, but, he was cut off mid speech. Haven’t seen that before.
That cut-off thing didn’t happen here, Jason, so it must have been local
I knew that it was one of Picasso’s paintings in FJ, but I just couldn’t come up with the name.
Liz made an epic comeback in the first half of DJ! She was the only playing answering in the first three categories and almost ran each of the category. Then, David staged a comeback in the second half of DJ! by successfully picking up 4,000 on a Daily Double. I think that Liz will probably earn an invitation to the Second Chance Tournament.
They may already have set up the Second Chance lineup for Season 40. EP Michael Davies said he planned to start Season 40 with Second Chance, followed by Champions Wild Card, and then the Tournament of Champions.
On top of that, a rerun of the Season 39 Second Chance tournament will kick off the hiatus (per my Xfinity guide)
Once again, I do not know what the criteria are, if any, for 2nd chance, but in my opinion, if you miss FJ, you’re not coming back.
