WHAT IS AUGUST?
Having August in the title, winning the Pulitzer for Drama and being adapted to film are 3 things these 2 plays have in common.
Tracy Letts’ play “August: Osage County” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008. Per dramatists.com, it requires a cast of 6 men and 7 women, and “unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family.” The reviews indicate the drama is interlaced with a heavy dose of comedy.
John Patrick’s play “The Teahouse of the August Moon” won the Pulitzer for Drama in 1954, but is usually listed as a comedy. Adapted from Vern Sneider’s same-titled 1951 novel, the play is set in 1945 Tobiki, a town on Okinawa. There, an Army of Occupation officer is tasked with Americanizing the natives, who turn the tables on him. The cast requires 30 people and a goat. The play, a film adaptation and a musical have all suffered for casting whites as Asians.
Carl stood pat on his $9,100.
Pete bet $12,601 and finished with $28,201.
Scott bet $4,000 and won the game with $32,200. Scott’s 9-day total is $233,501.

A triple stumper from each round:
HOMER ($1000) Izmir in Turkey, a traditional birthplace of Homer, is also called this, like a Georgia city that’s a traditional birthplace of Julia Roberts
MOVIES SET IN THE 1920s ($2000) Gregory Hines starred as Delbert “Sandman” Williams in this Harlem-set Francis Ford Coppola movie that begins in 1928
2 years ago: ALL of the players got this FJ in “MAN-MADE OBJECTS”
Around since 1998, it’s now roughly the length of a football field & travels at about 5 miles per second show

I was 2/3 on DD (should have known the 2nd one, having SEEN THE MOVIE on TCM). However, I missed Final, because I’m not much of a non-musical theatre guy.
I thought the hit for the cycle question was “inside the park home run”. Those are pretty darn tootin’ rare!
Still, a fun game.
Terrific game. Carl rallied strongly, Pete was outstanding and never got to try any of the DDs. I miraculously hit all 3, the first and last being guesses. Got Final quickly because I’d heard of the 2007 play. Couldn’t recall the earlier one till Ken mentioned it, then remembered seeing the film with Brando.
Got the Coppola movie (that was a toughie). Sad none of them knew the toughest part of the cycle, even after one of them swung and missed. Unwed designer definitely was guessable. The Spurs/vampire before and after was pretty easy. Obviously this group wasn’t into “sportsball.”
Scott is the first player this season to win 9 games. He is now in first place in the TOC tracker and is now #20 in the all-time winnings. It was exactly one year ago today when Isaac won his 9th game on July 15, 2024 and on this date, Scott won his 9th game and lightning struck twice.
