WHO IS SHIRLEY JACKSON?

Author, Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) is well-known for her short story, “The Lottery,” which was first published in “The New Yorker” in 1948. She also wrote the 1959 bestseller “The Haunting of Hill House.” Her influence on the horror and mystery genre has impacted many writers, including Stephen King, who wrote an introduction to one edition of “Hill House” and also dedicated his novel “Firestarter” (1980) “In Memory of Shirley Jackson, who never needed to raise her voice.”

I read once that “The Lottery” shocked so many people that a lot of people cancelled their subscriptions. Even at 20¢ a copy, Harold Ross took the risk.

  2. Elan Xu says:

I hope he might win his fifth game tomorrow

  3. Jacob ska says:

Shirley Jackson imo passed away far too early in life. I can only imagine what other great literary works she would have written. Gone but not forgotten.

On a more positive note Happy 95th Birthday Johnny Gilbert on Saturday July 13th.

    • VJ says:

I agree about Shirley Jackson, Jacob, and also want to add belated Happy Birthday wishes to Johnny Gilbert. What an amazing guy!

    • rhonda says:

Wow, I had no idea that Johnny Gilbert is 95, he’s beyond incredible!

Are we back to the 4-game curse? If we are, I’m gonna be shocked.

  5. Lou says:

Rare to see a daily double at the top of the board. And once again congrats to Sam on winning game 4. I feel game five might be in his corner since Sam had strong knowledge today. By the way though VJ, do you know if any of Shirley Jackson’s books were made into computer games that are horror themed based? Ayn Rand was not a horror Novelist not sure why Jeff chose her.

    • VJ says:

No, Lou, I don’t have any idea if any of her books were made into computer games. Maybe something inspired by her books?

Sam will certainly get a 5th win if the DDs work out in his favor. They sure worked out in his favor a big way today. Another great payday!

(I found an article that Ken Jennings wrote that answers one of the triple stumpers)

  6. Trevor Panno says:

February 1, 1988 was the last time I saw a daily double at the top of the board in the double jeopardy round.

    • JP says:

For those who are curious, the last time a Double Jeopardy round Daily Double was in the $400 row was June 25, 2018, under “The American Revolution”:

“General Thomas Gage, military governor of this colony, gave the orders that started the war in 1775”

According to the stats at The Jeopardy Archive, this happens about once a year, and the same is true for the top row of the Jeopardy round.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

9 more games left until the Season Finale. Congrats to Sam, a 4 day champion with $113,801.

Just like that in Double Jeopardy!. Huh? The Daily Double on a $400 clue in Double Jeopardy. It’s safe to say we don’t see very often last time we had one was the 32 season finale.
