The Final Jeopardy question (7/13/2016) in the category “The Western Hemisphere” was:

Jason finished in the lead with $13,600. Sue was next with $9,600 and Benn was in third place with $9,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Fray Tomás de Berlanga, 4th Bishop of Panama, is credited with the discovery of the Galapagos Islands in 1535, in terms of putting it on the map. Sailing from Panama to Peru, the bishop’s ship went off its course. For lack of water, they were forced to go ashore when land was sighted. The Bishop’s report of the episode eventually resulted in the islands’ inclusion on world maps as “Insulae de los Galopegos” (“Islands of the Tortoises”), after the giant tortoises seen there.

“Charles Darwin came to the Islands aboard the HMS Beagle, captained by Robert Fitzroy in 1835…. he made extensive collections of plants and animals, and recorded observations on their natural history which were later to form the foundation for his work ‘The Origin of Species’, published 24 years later – the rest is just history! Benn got it right. He bet $9,396 and finished with $18,796.

Sue also got it. Her $9,400 bet brought her up to $19,000.

Jason thought it was the Cook Islands. He lost his $5,601 bet, leaving him with $7,999. So Sue Baker won the match, much to her amazement. She is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I really enjoyed this game today. The champ’s expression after winning was priceless & Benn’s sense of humor was great to watch. Good categories imo.

VJ thanks for the “Who’s Your Daddy” category. It was one of my favorites also.

I liked that “Who’s Your Daddy” category so much today, I had to go put that up first.

Here’s a link to 12 more clues from the match. Hope you guys check it out for the link on the $600 Tequila clue 🙂

I liked that category a lot, too, VJ. Thanks for the fun tequila link, it made me smile and I’m not even a country and western fan! I don’t know how you find all of the great links that you always post.

Mathwiz, I was not passing judgment on you. I was explaining why I no longer predict. I did so for numerous years as vj’s archives will show. I’m like a little kid playing with toys I guess. When they’re no longer fun to play with the kids toss them aside.

I would have predicted Jason would have gotten this fj. Just consider me one who has met his Waterloo in J! Contestant predictions. lol

    • Mathwiz100 says:

Again, understandable. I am sure that I will also meet my Waterloo one day, too. 😉

  4. Mathwiz100 says:

…and so ends the tale of Jason George… I guess what they say is true: “The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.”

To Jacob’s credit, the Cook Islands are about 150 miles away from the Tropic of Capricorn… and 1500 miles away from the equator. I am guessing that Jason gave that response because he was thinking of the famous visit there in 1773 by… Captain Cook.

  5. jacob ska says:

What? Aren’t the Cook Islands closer to the Tropic of Capricorn? Mathwiz, now you see why I stopped making predictions on what might come out of the mouths of contestants. Jason, imo, was a good player. It only takes one bad move in fj to blow a person out of the game.

Jason, you were a good contender. Congrats to the new champ.

    • Mathwiz100 says:

I understand what you mean, Jacob… I do my predictions solely for fun, however. I don’t mind if I get it wrong or right.

      • VJ says:

Yeah, me too. Right or wrong, half the time, I can’t even remember what happened the next day. LOL.
