Final Jeopardy: Medieval Science (6-7-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/7/2018) in the category “Medieval Science” was:
13th c. Emperor Frederick II’s “De Arte Venandi cum Avibus” was the first work written about this -ology
New champ Michelle Rosen, a PhD candidate from Massachusetts, won $18,401 yesterday. In Game 2, she is up against these two guys: Mirza Gluhic, a transcriber from Canada; and Andy Mills, a math instructor from Iowa.
Round 1 Categories: Photography – It’s Hyphenated – American Dogs – Decades of No. 1-rated TV Shows – Asian Food – I’ll Have Seconds
Andy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “It’s Hyphenated” under the $800 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in second place with $800, $1,200 less than Michelle’s lead. He bet $1,000 and didn’t have a guess so he was WRONG.

Michelle found the first Daily Double in “I Lake It Like That” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick. She was in second place with $4,000 at this point, $4,400 behind Mirza’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.
Convention-al wisdom says this crescent-shaped lake was formed by the Rhone River’s natural damming. show
Andy found the last Daily Double in “Brand Name Awareness” under the $2,000 clue. There was one clue left after. He was in the red for $600 and could only hope to get to play FJ! He bet the $2,000 allowance and guessed Eddie Bauer. That was WRONG.
This clothing store chain once had “Travel & Safari Clothing Co.” as part of its name. show
Mirza finished in the lead with a runaway $21,200. Michelle was next with $6,400 and Andy was out of the game at negative $2,600.
Only ONE of the contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.
Frederick II has been called the greatest falconry enthusiast ever. His book, De Arte Venandi cum Avibus is called both “The Art of Falconry” and “The Art of Hunting with Birds.” On the Natural History Network, John G.T. Anderson says the work “covers a broad range of avian taxa and contains a wealth of information, some drawn from ancient authors including Aristotle but much from Frederick’s personal observation and experimentation.” Anyone who reads it “will come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation both of birds and the science of ornithology and also of one of the truly great minds of medieval natural history.”
Find out why they called Frederick II “Stupor mundi”
Michelle wrote down biology. She lost $6,399 and that left her a dollar.
Mirza got it right. He bet $7,000 so his already winning total rose to $28,200. Mirza Gluhic is the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round:

I finished the list of extra clues but I missed this one triple stumper in the “Prince” category: “One of the first videos by a black artist to get regular airplay on MTV was this one, inspired by a pink Mercury Marauder. Prince was vaulted in super-stardom as the song rode up the charts”
Mirza buzzed in with a Beach Boys tune, “Little Deuce Coupe”, and no one else gave it a try.

@VJ
I believe it was “Little Red Corvette”, released 1999.
Yup, I know that, John, but the idea was to let people who didn’t see the game take a crack at it.
It was released in1982, the album name is1999
At least we now know mirza might have a chance to build up his lead, just like Andrew Haringer did during his five game run back in 2015. Furthermore, Andy didn’t have much of a chance in winning today so how was he selected? And VJ I thought Andy knew a lot more than what is expected today.
@Louis
The 2 missed DDs didn’t help either…. and yes, either he was “frozen” or just an “unlucky” pick by J to be on the air.
It looks like it was not that easy after all. Latin certainly would have helped. But then we don’t know if Andy had known the right answer. Still, just because the hard core part of the FF family knows an answer does not necessarily mean that the players do.
Just out of curiosity: Mizra is a Pakistani/Indian name. At least from the picture he looks anything but…? More a guy from New England?
And we have yet another new champion. The chances of a 3 day winner in the ToC increase with every time somebody does not win at least 4 games. The way things are going….Maybe this year/season is jinxed somehow.
BUT: congratulations to Mizra. Alex will be happy that a fellow Canadian won.
On the other hand, till the middle of the 20 th century India and what now is Pakistan had a large percentage of British residents. Still, British subjects hardly ever christened their children other than with a “British” first name? Just curious. Maybe it comes up in the interview portion.
His name is MiRza, not MiZra. According to Behind the Name, its origin is Persian and Arabic and it is most popular in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Still he doesn’t look like he has even partially Slavic roots either, more WASP (in the positive, not pejorative sense). Maybe it will come up in today’s or tomorrows interview.
Zombies marching by his wedding ceremony was his chat topic today
