WHO ARE CASTOR & POLLUX?

Castor and Pollux are brothers from Greek and Roman mythology considered the twin sons of Zeus or Jupiter, most famous as the two brightest stars in the constellation Gemini. They are also known as the Dioscuri meaning “youths of Zeus,” although Castor was said to be the son of Tyndareus, king of Sparta. Their mother was Leda, the Spartan queen seduced by Zeus and they were the brothers of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. In addition to Homer’s works, Castor and Pollux appear in the works of Euripides, Pindar and Ovid. In the New Testament, Acts 28:11 (KJV), Paul and his crew left Malta “in a ship of Alexandria…whose sign was Castor and Pollux.”

The World History website has a thorough account of the mythological adventures of Castor and Pollux which includes their stint as Argonauts, helping Jason find the Golden Fleece. “It was during this latter adventure that Pollux out-boxed the prodigiously strong Amycus, king of the Bebryces…. Castor was held to be a skilled horse-tamer while Pollux possessed great boxing skills.”

Ryan wrote down Agamemnon & Menelaus (brothers who married Castor & Pollux’ sisters). He lost his $6,799 bet and finished with one dollar.

Stephanie went with Achilles & Aeschylus. That cost her $6,000 and left her with $3200.

Eric got it right. He bet $8,201 and won the game with $18,401. Eric Ahasic is the new Jeopardy! champ and latest giant-killer, uh… slayer.

I’m tempted to say Ryan seemed disinterested tonight, but his placid demeanor never changed during his entire run. He won a number of games after at least a couple he should have lost thanks to faulty wagering by his opponents.

Eric went for the kill with that late $5K DD wager, but kudos to him for knowing FJ.

  2. Jason says:

Mayim was choppy, again, tonight. I really think she’s looking to the judges before she makes a call. Last week, when there was the two days in a row with a scoring change, the US online version of the Sun, from the UK, was witheringly hammering on her about that.

I thought that FJ was difficult. What do I think of, though, for “Pollux”? That is the medical term for the thumb!

  3. VJ says:

These are all the famous Philadelphians who never won 16 straight games of Jeopardy! that Mayim had to reel off at the beginning of the show: Rocky Balboa, Boyz II Men, Joe Frazier, Tina Fey, Bradley Cooper, Marshmello, Questlove, Dick Clark and Grace Kelly.

Dick Clark was actually from New York but hosted American Bandstand out of Philly. Chubby Checker did the Twist and Dee Dee Sharpe did the Mashed Potatoes on Bandstand. Bobby Rydell did The Cha Cha Cha, and the Orlons did the Wah-Watusi — all Philly acts.

    • Jacob Ska says:

I almost fell out of my chair when she said Rocky Balboa. I was expecting to hear the Phillie Phanatic next. I’m glad the other names were real people. Sylvester Stallone attended high school in Philadelphia although he was born in New York city. Wonder why she didn’t mention his name instead? At least he’s a real person.

      • VJ says:

I agree, Jacob. Maybe they originally had Will Smith there and had to make a quick change. 🤣

I thought Grace Kelly was a bit much — her descendants will probably still be ruling Monaco after everyone else on that list is forgotten

  4. William Weyser says:

Castor & Pollux makes me think of Castor Troy & Pollux Troy from “FACE/OFF”.

    • Lou says:

I agree, I was thinking of the same thing also. Ryan is now in the TOC but there is a chance that he might be in the next one since the second chance tournament is also coming up soon.

Ryan had a great run for the month of May like Mattea did previously. This year has been loaded with long running streakers so far.

      • William Weyser says:

Yes, it has been. 1st, Matt Amodio with 38. Then, Jonathan Fisher with 11, like Arthur Chu. Then, Amy Schneider with 40. Then, Mattea Roach with 23, as a 23-Year Old. Now, Ryan Long with 16.
