Final Jeopardy: The Beatles (6-4-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/4/2014), in the category “The Beatles” was:

Of the Beatles’ 20 U.S. No. 1 Hits, this song has the shortest title.

New champ Sarah Fremgen won $21,000 yesterday, beating Brian Loughnane, who beat Julia Collins. Let’s see if Sarah can chalk up another win against these two players: Guy Wilson, from Leesburg, FL; and Heather Powell, from Schwenksville, PA.

Round 1: Sarah found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “That’s All in the Past” under the $600 clue. She was in the lead with $5,000, $3,200 ahead of Heather in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Paul Revere whipped up patriotic anger with his image of this bloody 1770 event. show

Sarah finished in the lead with $11,000. Heather was second with $3,800 and Guy was last with $2,000.

Round 2: Guy found the first Daily Double in “Food in the Bible” under the $1,200 clue. He was in third place with $3,200, $8,600 less than Sarah’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

After the Israelites crossed into Canaan & other sustenance was available, this food stopped falling. show

Heather found the last Daily Double in “The Theatre” under the $1,200 clue. She was now in third place with $5,000, $6,800 behind Sarah’s lead. She bet $3,500 and she was RIGHT.

This magazine began in 1884 as a handout for David Belasco’s “May Blossom”. show

Sarah finished in the lead with $19,400. Guy was next with $15,200 and Heather was in third place with $8,900.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “HELP!”?

There are 9 titles with under 10 letters in the Beatles’ No. 1 U.S. hits. Help! (1965) is the shortest even if you include the exclamation point. The other 8 are: Get Back (1969), Hey Jude (1968), Let It Be (1970), Love Me Do (1964), I Feel Fine (1964), Penny Lane (1967), Something (1969) and Yesterday (1965).

Given that set of information, there had to be a more challenging FJ than this one! Click here for a list of all 20 of the Fab Four’s No. 1 hits in the USA.

Heather got it right and added $8,000 to her score. She finished with $16,900.

Guy thought it was “Hey Jude.” That cost him $6,200 and he finished with $9,000.

Sarah got it right too. She bet $12,000 so she won her second match with $31,400. Her 2-day total is $52,400.

“Do we have another big winner in the making here?” Alex Trebek asked. Well, that first round (chock full of easy clues) was a massacre so it would at least seem that Sarah’s got the buzzer under control.

There weren’t too many triple stumpers in this game. One was the very last clue on the board ($1,000) in “I’m a Changed Man”: “This Kafka guy awakes to find he has an armor-plated back, a domelike brown belly & numerous legs.” and in the second round, no one buzzed in on the $2,000 clue in “Body Latin”: “Supercilium.”

2 years ago:: ALL of the players got this FJ in “Women in Entertainment”

1 of the first 2 women in Hollywood to own a studio (according to the official bio of No. 3, Oprah). show

I didn’t want Sarah to win because I was expected to have a new champion every day this week after Julia Collins’ run

  2. jacobska says:

Don’t know how many of you watch Business channels but I do. It was just announced that Julia Collins will appear on CNBC between 12 and 1 o’clock Eastern Standard Time. She will be matching wits with the stock traders. This should be interesting. I will be watching and let you know the outcome. We shall see what will happen to her in the long run.

As I said in one of my previous posts on this website that she will end up making more money than she ever made on Jeopardy through endorsements and special appearances.

    • vj says:

thanks for heads up on that Jacob — I can stream CNBC live on the computer so I saw it. Totes odd!! — I got a screen cap and I’ll check and see if they put the clip on youtube later.

      • jacobska says:

They must not have done their homework to ask her that hashtag question. She used Twitter during the airing of Jeopardy to tweet her thoughts. I like that she asked how to invest her winnings. It was also nice to hear that her student loan debt had already been paid off. That is one of the biggest problems for college graduates today.

      • vj says:

ha ha – yes that twitter question was nuts!

As most of you probably have realized, I think as I type. Occasionally, I believe that I may have insight, or, more likely, a vision to a sight to insight.
Now I have never taken the qualifying test for Jeopardy. Does anyone know if just one test is given to everyone? If so, it would be very easy to cheat. Of course, there is a followup interview. Is there a quality filter test given? Certainly, cheating on the first test could help explain at least part of the reason that participant quality has declined.

    • vj says:

idk, it would seem to me that even if there’s a way to cheat on the online test, what good is that going to do you when you show up and have to take an in-person test where you can’t cheat?

    • eric steele says:

Or, possibly, people cheat on the first test, get found out or suspected, but the process gets gummed up by these cretins and thus, less time is available to find viable candidates.

  4. jacobska says:

Must not be many Beatles fans on this website. No conversation about today being the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Beatles’ first world tour June 4, 1964.

    • jacobska says:

Per Trebek that is why the Final Jeopardy clue was about the Beatles. Although it was far too easy. It would have been better to have had a category about them. They have had enough songs, movies, etc to warrant a category instead of that far too easy FJ. What is wrong with the writers?

    • vj says:

That was like a leftover $200 clue from a Beatles category. Never was a fan of the Beatles myself.

I am more of a fan of songs, then singers or groups. And I like songs that have catchy lyrics at least — which prob explains why I never quite understood the fascination with Hey Jude

      • john blahuta says:

        @ VJ
not liking groups: remember “the brothers four” imo the best harmony EVER, including the beatles!!!

        • vj says:

Let me clarify John. Not saying I don’t like groups or singers. I’m just not a fan type person in the sense that whatever song they do, that’s the only one, that’s the best. The Brothers Four surely had fantastic harmonies but take “Yellow Bird”, for example. I like Emile Ford and the Checkmates version of that better. I like “Froggy Went a-Courtin” by Tex Ritter better than them.

There are groups and singers that I like a lot of their work – Bobby Darin is one – love “Beyond the Sea” and I love the French original by Trenet – La Mer. Sarah Vaughan is another I truly admire. Her “Whatever Lola Wants” is the best I’ve ever heard.

      • jacobska says:

Oh! That must be the sentiment throughout America which is why Jeopardy played it down. Alex mentioned it real quick and moved on. My friends in Denmark emailed me that it is having a big 50th there. Probably since that’s where their first world tour kickoff began.

  5. john blahuta says:

@VJ did you notice -of course- how the # of posts shot up during and after the TotD?? sometimes – actually often- it takes a controversial issue to get things rolling.

    • jacobska says:

VJ deserves a Webby Award–the highest honor on the Internet. She really works hard. What she does is not easy.

      • vj says:

Thanks, fellas. It is reward enough for me that all of you enjoy the recap 🙂

        • jacobska says:

No other website does the recap as well as you.

        • eric steele says:

Not only is it tight, but you do a great job of adjusting to our desires. It would be nice if someone got in with your help.

        • vj says:

Well, trivia and quiz sites are going to help folks for sure so maybe if we just keep adding the best resources to the howdies, it will help somebody!

  6. john blahuta says:

    @ eric
no, i did not see that post about T.Vanek. what was that about? and which would you consider now the longest title? tlawr or iwthyh??

    • eric steele says:

The post was in reply to yours in Colleges and Universities (under “Basketball fan…) It’s too long to repeat here, but hope you enjoy it. The Canadiens should be on The Game of the Week sometime next year. Let me know if you want a briefing on the basics, as you’re really not in a hockey town.

      • john blahuta says:

not really, but i am somewhat a past hockey fan. when i was living in austria, the european and world championships were a BIG deal, old ussr, czechoslovakia, sweden, etc. that was even before the u.s entered the picture and basted the russians in 1980 (not counting the upset at the olympics in 1960, where they also beat the ussr and then in the final beat czechoslovakia in squaw valley. this is mostly forgotten and overshadowed by the 1980 win in lake placid and consequently winning the gold by beating finland in the last game).since the 1960 games also counted as world championship and european championship, the u.s. became olympic gold medalists, world champion, while the ussr as best placed european team became european champion.but between 1960 and 1980 the u.s. went sort of into hibernation and hockey was dominated by european teams, always the same though…..usually the final was ussr vs. czechoslovakia.
        thanks,take care!!

        • eric steele says:

Sorry if I seemed condescending, should have known you would know about hockey. I actually don’t know that much about the European championship, or about the Worlds either. I know far more about the Stanley Cup. Thanks for taking the time to read. You guys are incredible.

      • john blahuta says:

ok, got it. vanek=typical austrian (czech) name. toni fritsch (former austrian soccer player btw played kicer for the cowboys, chargers, oilers and saints from ’71-’85. maybe you remember him? he was quite good.even won the super bowl in ’72 i believe with dallas.

    • john blahuta says:

btw, got a point there with “let it be” or “super……”not gonna write the whole thing, only mess it up!

  7. eric steele says:

For anyone looking to augment the help that VJ is providing, a project similar to what Dave Madden is heading, the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) offers, on their website, a tab called “you gotta know” where they list the ten most important items of many different topics. It obviously won’t provide all that you may have to know, but can certainly help seal the cracks. Good luck and tell us when you get chosen.
P.S. I can assure you that you don’t need to know all of the hockey players (probably Wayne Gretzky -for sure-, Gordy Howe, and Bobby Orr will do).

    • vj says:

Thanks Eric, I put a link to that resource in the Hometown Howdies post.

      • eric steele says:

You’re welcome as always. Tight coverage.
See Nomi, you are going in.

    • Nomi says:

Thanks, Eric. The page is bookmarked and will be visited many times in the days before the 2015 online test :).

      • eric steele says:

Nice. And you’re most welcome. Think I may take the test also. If you don’t hear from me after, you’ll know that I bombed. I wonder if everyone takes the same test? So easy to cheat if yes. I wonder about previous cheating. Hmmm.

        • Nomi says:

I think they have a pool of questions and they feed from it randomly to each test taker. 50 clues in all, and 15 seconds to respond to each; you don’t have to frame your reply in the form of a question…typos are overlooked, but not encouraged…etc etc…please register at Jeopardy.com, and we can compare notes after. And please don’t disappear even if you bomb. See, I’m still around, after flunking it thrice :).

    • john blahuta says:

      @eric
no, i did not see the post about Vanek. what was that about?

  8. eric steele says:

ONLY if you haven’t looked at the list, which number one had the LONGEST title (this one I missed)?

    • eric steele says:

Hint: my guess was Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and was wrong.

      • john blahuta says:

that was not a “1 hit for the beatles. given the irony with “HELP”, my guess would be “THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD”???? it has one word less than “I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND”, but 21 letters, iwhyh has 19 letters. so are we going by words or letters? it has to be one of the two, depending on the criteria (words/letters).

        • john blahuta says:

ok, i looked and both are on the list. so are you going by words or letters, eric??

        • eric steele says:

This is why I am not a Jeopardy writer (yeah, that’s why). I just assumed it was by letters.
btw John, just making sure you saw my post about Thomas Vanek?

        • eric steele says:

Idk: which is longer: Let it Be or Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

      • vj says:

they really shouldn’t let the cluewriters create clues that will have the players counting on their fingers — though I have seen it happen. It needs to be challenging but something a bright person can figure out in 20 seconds give or take a few so they have enough time to write it down, too.

How about this one: The Beatles had 3 one word No. 1 hits in the USA. This one was last (in 1969) and comes in second alphabetically.

  9. jacobska says:

Ok Bill. I give up. I am writing that song now you suggested the Beatles should have written on the CotD forum. With a FJ clue this easy that’s all left to say. I’m walking around singing my new song now.

What is wrong with the Jeopardy writers?

    • john blahuta says:

out of curiosity-i can’t find it-: what song should they have written? i’m really curious!!!

  10. john blahuta says:

how much easier can it get?? (including the 3 DDs, like yesterday)
kind of ironic that sarah was helped to win by “HELP !”do i detect a little british humor among the clue writers???

    • jacobska says:

I was listening to Julia yesterday on NPR. She was asked how she prepared for Jeopardy. She stated that they tell you what month the show will be aired. She then studied important events that took place in the month that the show would be aired.

After listening to Alex talk about the details tonight in the final category about the Beatles what she said made sense. I had never thought about that.
