Final Jeopardy: The Medical World (6-28-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/28/2023) in the category “The Medical World” was:

He created a chest drain valve that aided breathing in wounded soldiers in Vietnam but is better known for a lifesaving measure

New champ Chris Ban, an oral and facial surgeon from Pittsburgh, PA, won $13,000 yesterday. In Game 2, he takes on these two players: Vic Goel, a lawyer from Vienna, VA; and Bryan White, a senior regulatory compliance analyst orig. from Santa Maria, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Get Koala-fied – The Name of the Dame – Pledge of Allegiance Words – Google Easter Eggs – Open Door – Policy

Chris found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Open Door’” under the $800 clue just before the commercial break. He was in second place with $1,400, $2,600 less than Bryan’s lead. Chris made it a true Daily Double and said acacia. That was WRONG.

Legend says the Emperor Door at the Hagia Sophia was made from the timbers of this mentioned in Genesis show

Bryan finished in the lead with $6,600. Chris was second with $1,200 and Vic was last with $600. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Geography “B” – Plays & Playwrights – Constantinople – Random Access Memories – Animated Movie Characters – Prefixes

Bryan found the first Daily Double in “Plays & Playwrights” under the $800 on the 14th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $12,600, $9,000 more than Chris in second place. Bryan bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

This Irish playwright who won the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature wrote in both English & French show

Bryan got the last Daily Double in “Constantinople” under the $1,600 clue with 10 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $18,000 now, $14,400 more than Chris in second place. Bryan bet $2,000 and guessed vandals. That was WRONG.

In 532 A.D. “blue” and “green” fan groups of this type of racing rioted in Constantinople show

Bryan finished in the lead with a runaway $18,400. Chris was second with $4,800 and Vic was last with $4,200. The $2,000 clue in Prefixes was not shown.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HENRY HEIMLICH?

Henry Heimlich was an American surgeon and medical researcher. He is most well known as the inventor of the “Heimlich Maneuver”, a rescue technique to aid a person who is choking on something. Other inventions that Heimlich has been credited with are the Heimlich Chest Drain Valve mentioned in the clue and a portable oxygen system. The reason why so many sites say Heimlich is or has been “credited with” rather than just “invented” is because a great deal of doubt has been cast upon Heimlich’s claims.

Even his own son called him a fraud, as was noted in my recap of the 12/5/2014 Jeopardy! match from Kids Week. All the kids got that clue right, too.

Vic bet $4,000 and finished with $8,200.

Chris bet $3,750 and finished with $8,550.

Bryan bet $1,730 and won the game with $20,130. Bryan White is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I got FJ easily, because of my line of work. However, less than half the TS were given a correct response by me.

To agree (as usual) with Howard, Bryan was straight fire. I don’t know why he went to the $400 clue, though, knowing time was counting down.

Maybe he can string a few together. Last night, I thought the librarian would get FJ. (I didn’t watch it until today.)

  2. Howard says:

Well, Bryan certainly took no prisoners tonight. He must have misunderstood the clue on the DD when he said vandals. it was pretty obvious what type of racing they were seeking.

“Chest drain valve” led me right down the rabbit hole to the Jarvik heart pump.

Those stumpers were all way too tough for me, other than the cinch one about crime against a building or thing that’s not robbery.

  3. Collin says:

The $2,000 “Prefixes” clue (the final clue) wasn’t played and read. Double Jeopardy rounded ended with a beeping sound today instead of reading the last clue.

In Final Jeopardy, Vic wrote “Hi Mom!” with the correct Final response.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

When was the last time at an exact date that all three players got FJ! correct?

  5. William Weyser says:

1st Triple Solve in a while.
