WHO IS VALENTINA TERESHKOVA?

In her NASA biography, it says that Valentina Tereshkova’s interest and subsequent expertise in parachute jumping led to her selection as a cosmonaut. “Under the direction of Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, four women were selected to be trained for a special woman-in-space program. Of the four women selected, only Valentina Tereshkova completed a space mission. Tereshkova was launched aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963 and became the first woman to fly in space. During the 70.8 hour flight, Vostok 6 made 48 orbits of Earth. Upon completion of her mission, Tereshkova was honored with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. She never flew again, but she did become a spokesperson for the Soviet Union. While fulfilling this role, she received the United Nations Gold Medal of Peace.”

Danielle wrote down Svetlana Vladimirk and it looked like she was trying to add more after that but time ran out. That cost her $1,900 and left her with $100.

Joel went with Korbut. He lost his $10,000 bet and finished with $5,400.

Sandy got it right. She bet $12,000 and won the game with $31,200. Sandy Olive’s 2-day total is $52,200.

Hopefully Sandy Olive gets to be a 5x champ someday! Even an 161x champ at the latest to defeat Ken Jennings!

  2. Rick says:

Wow. I didn’t get the final question right, but it was rather obvious that it had to be a woman in the Soviet space program.

  3. Jacob Ska says:

Wow Sandy! What a pleasant surprise….first and last name provided. I like it. Could we be seeing a 5x champion in the making? I hope so. Good job Sandy. I like the Daily Double clues too.

  4. JP says:

“Name the southernmost Central American country” for $2,000? Doesn’t that seem like a top row question?

  5. Lou says:

I am not that familiar with the first female russian astronaut in space, but Korbut? Really? If I remember correctly, VJ Last I checked Olag Korbut is a gymnast and not an astronaut. She was nicknamed the sparrow from minsk that won 4 gold medals and a couple of silver medals from the summer olympic games. What was joel thinking? Sandy was pretty quick on the buzzer today. Looks like she could definitely pull off another win despite not getting that daily double.

    • JP says:

Please explain further why you think “Korbut” was a bad guess, given the information the contestants had access to in the clue.

      • Lou says:

Well because when they mentioned famous women, they could have said like famous women in space which would have been more easier for the contestants to know what the final clue was referring to, jp. That would have helped a lot. Korbut would fit under famous femaie gymnasts to clear up the confusion.

        • Jacob Ska says:

Lou, imo the fact that the contestants who provided incorrect responses knew which country uses the ruble as a currency is a plus. Some other contestants may have been thrown off by that little factoid.

        • JP says:

That seems like more of a criticism of the clue writers, not the contestants. It’s still not clear to me why Korbut should be considered a bad guess.

It seems like you are criticizing the contestant for not coming up with an astronaut (or cosmonaut) as their response, when there is no indication in the clue that the correct response would have such an occupation.

(@VJ, I know this is a lost cause, but I think it’s a fun exercise to go through every few months)

        • VJ says:

lol, JP, I guess it is interesting today when they had that gimme for a Country Facts DD. I think the majority of viewers want the Final Jeopardy! clue to be challenging. It’s very true that we have seen some really easy FJ clues over the years. However, I still think most viewers would be quite disappointed and lose interest in the game if every FJ gave TMI, like The Space Race being the category for this clue or Famous Gymnasts being the category for a clue about Olga Korbut.

Kudos to Sandy for knowing how to spell Valentina’s last name. 😁 A+ to Danielle for perfect handwriting. 😁

      • Howard says:

Korbut wasn’t a horrible guess, but her moment of glory came in 1972, and could not have been accomplished in 1963, which the clue pointed out.
