WHAT IS ELLIS ISLAND?
Ellis Island is a 27.5 acre island in Upper New York Harbor, less than half a mile from the Statue of Liberty. Per its timeline, 1892 thru 1914 was its peak period for processing migrants. Ellis Island was used mainly to detain and deport migrants after the Immigration Act of 1924 was passed. Genealogist Megan Smolenyak tracked down the details surrounding Arne Pettersen (two Ts, one S per her documentation), the last person to leave Ellis Island in 1954. She also wrote a book about the real Annie Moore, the first person to be processed at Ellis Island.
From “The Godfather Part II” (1974): Young Vito Andolini (Oreste Baldini) arrives at Ellis island in 1901 and gets renamed Vito Corleone.
