Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/24/2019) in the category “Colleges & Universities” was:
Starting a university after his only son died in 1884, this man said, “The children of California shall be our children”
The first semi-final match of the 2019 Teen Tournament features: Justin Bolsen, a freshman from Canton, GA;; Lucas Miner, a junior from Miami, FL; and Hannah Nekritz, a senior from Stamford, CT.
Round 1 Categories: Debate Club – Animated TV – There’s an Emoji for That – Silent Letter but Deadly – Kitchen – Island
Lucas found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Island” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick of the round. At $600, he was the only one with any money. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Justin found the last Daily Double in “Al Gebra” under the $1,200 clue, with just 2 clues worth $3,600 left after it. In third place with $6,600, he had $7,800 less than Lucas’ lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “root.” That was WRONG.

Lucas finished in the lead with $18,000. Hannah was next with $10,800. Justin, at zero, was out of the game at this point.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Leland Stanford was one of the “Big Four” railroad tycoons who built the Central Pacific Railroad. Stanford’s son and namesake died at the age of 15 in Florence, Italy from typhoid fever while on a Grand Tour of Europe with his parents. Philanthropy Roundtable says: “In their grief, the Stanfords pledged to themselves that “the children of California shall be our children,” and founded the Leland Stanford Junior University in 1885. “With total giving that would amount today to $478 million, Stanford personally funded the operations of the university during its early years.”
A 2014 clue: THE PRESIDENT’S ALMA MATER ($800) Herbert Hoover was in the class of 1895, this California school’s first
Hannah didn’t have a complete response with “S-t-e” and another letter that looked like “i” but might have been the start of something else. She lost $10,700, leaving her with $100.
Lucas got it right. He bet $3,601, winning the match with $21,601. Lucas Miner is the first finalist.

I feel bad for Justin for being out of FJ due to an unfortunate DD. He got all 3 DD’s correct in his Quarter-Final game and probably felt very confident to go all in on that DD tonight. Bummer.
Yeah, Cece, but I guess that is what Justin felt compelled to do at that point. There were only 2 clues left and if he doubled up and got those last two clues, he would have had the lead. Same thing if he held back $600, but I guess under that pressure, he wasn’t worried about sticking around for FJ. He was just trying to grab that lead.
As it turned out, Lucas got both of those last 2 clues.
Justin, all I have to say is ”DARN THOSE DAILY DOUBLES!”.
Sad that Justin is out of the semifinals after missing one of daily doubles that was very simple. Like come on now, how did he get square roots and exponents confused? Congrats to Lucas on being the first finalist as always. Speaking of leland, VJ have you ever played the pc game of railroad tycoon? I heard it’s so cool and more about building rails and boosting economy.
No, Lou, I’ve never played that game. I don’t think I ever saw it anywhere. My daughter says she’s heard of Lemonade Tycoon but she never played it.

The promo says they’re having a tiebreaker later this week.
Really!? Where did you get it!?
Congrats to Lucas for being the first finalist and he was the only contestant that got Final Jeopardy correct and he’s coming back on Thursday and Friday to play for $100,000 and we’ll find out who will the other two contestants join him in the finals.
Sounds like we knew what Justin was thinking. So that’s 4 Teen Tournaments in a row with Josiah Takang, Antonio Karides, Dan Oxman, and Justin Bolsen.
You’re right, 4 Teen Tournament contestants finish with $0 or negative at the end of Double Jeopardy. Too bad our contestant Justin is out of the game with no money making it a 17th that he or she won’t be able to play in Final Jeopardy because they finish with $0 or negative score.
