TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN?

According to the New England Historical Society, Ben Franklin read Cotton Mather’s “Do Good” essays when he was 11 years old. At age 16, Franklin is said to have borrowed from that title and from Mather’s “Silentiarius” essay to come up with the pseudonym Silence DoGood, a middle-aged woman. His intention was to publish a letter, mocking hypocrisy, in his brother James’ newspaper, The New England Courant, where he served as apprentice. Ben wrote a total of 14 Silence Dogood letters between April and October of 1722 before telling his brother that he was Silence Dogood. The revelation was not well-received by James.

A couple of years later, Ben visited Cotton Mather and learned a lifelong lesson from the Puritan minister that he related to Mather’s son, Samuel, in a 1784 letter.

Audrey got it right. She bet everything and finished with $16,800.

Sreekar got it, too. He bet $3,600, finishing with $18,000.

Jackson came up with Jonathan Edwards. That only cost him $400. He won the semi-final spot with the remaining $21,600.

Strong wildcard scores here by the players today and a wise bet from Jackson. Jonathan Edwards is actually a preacher and a congregationalist. I’ve never heard of him but do you remember what some of his famous quotes were VJ? I think this year’s teen tournament is much better than last year’s.

You mean June 2019’s teen tournament is better than November 2018?

    • VJ says:

Well, I’ve got a lot of quote books around here, Lou, but that doesn’t mean I can remember them all. “The Yale Book of Quotations” I’ve got sitting right here only has one quote from Jonathan Edwards in it:

“The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider … abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked; his wrath toward you burns like fire…” yada yada

It’s from his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” — hardly something that would make my favorite quotes list. 😮

More impressive playing today – Jackson (Alex loved his name) is obviously a science whiz.
