Final Jeopardy: Infamous (6-2-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/2/2015), in the category “Infamous” was:

Born in Illinois of Huguenot ancestry, he was executed in June 1882, a year after his heinous act.

5x champ Dan Feitel went over the $100K mark yesterday — way over! He has now won $127,998. Today he takes on these two players: Tara Whittle, from Troy, NY; and Jacob Johnson, from Murray, UT.

Round 1: Jacob found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Meanwhile Back at the Ranch” under the $1,000 clue, with 4 clues left on the board. He was in second place with $2,800, $4,800 behind Dan’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Dan finished in the lead with $8,200. Jacob was second with $6,400 and Tara was last with $3,000.

Round 2: Dan found the first Daily Double in “Ziggurats” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $15,000, $5,800 more than Jacob in second place. He bet $4,000 and guessed Ramses. That was WRONG.

Jacob found the last Daily Double in “Hazardous to Your Health” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $9,600, he was $3,400 behind Dan’s lead. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.

In 2014 the CDC reported 4 total confirmations of this disease in the U.S.: the first was on September 30th. show

This tight race ended with Dan in the lead with $16,600. Jacob was next with $14,100 and Tara was in third place with $8,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS CHARLES GUITEAU?

“When James A. Garfield was attacked on July 2, 1881, the nation was shocked, enraged, and captivated. President for just four months, Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau as he was about to board a train at the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. Severely wounded, Garfield lingered until September 19…. Guiteau was convicted of murder and hanged on June 30, 1882.” (Sudden Death of a President)

Tara didn’t have a reply. She lost her $6,300 bet and finished with $2,300.

Jacob got it right. He bet $3,101 and finished with $17,201.

Dan also had no response. He did his everything but a dollar thing for the last time until maybe, probably, the TOC.

Congrats to new champ Jacob Johnson. That was some performance!

Jacob is an actor. During the chat, he talked about acting in a play where making fun of politics in Salt Lake City gets the laughs. In the Gephardt Daily, he talked about his experience on Jeopardy!

The link between psychotropic medications causing metabolic abnormalities, specifically diabetes has been well documented. Children with autism are at greater risk for diabetes because of this.

    Link with more information

  2. jacob ska says:

That reversal ruling for Jacob has me baffled on autism.

The clue read “This condition has increased in the last 30 years in U.S. kids and is linked to increased risk for diabetes.”

Jacob said autism and it was negged. Then Tara said obesity which was ruled correct. Then Jacob’s response was ruled correct on a reversal ruling.

Never heard that autism caused diabetes. Have read that pregnant women with diabetes might give birth to children with autism.

    Am I missing something here?

    • VJ says:

beats me – I heard the same as you (gestational diabetes) and there’s also been a dispute over the increase in autism. Has it really increased or is it just better diagnosis, better reporting etc.

I think the judges mixed that one up.

      • jacob ska says:

Thanks vj for verifying that I’m not insane. At least not yet. 😀

        • Cece says:

I agree with you both. I think that’s messed up. Maybe we should call that pediatrician who was on the show the other day…:)

So, the bells finally tolled for Dan. He had a nice run, though.

        • VJ says:

@Cece, oh, no! We can’t be bothering her. She’s probably got her hands full assuring her patients’ parents that she knows anatomy. LOL!!

        • Cece says:

          LOL!

On another note, I’m 0-for-2 this week on FJ! Yesterday, I didn’t even attempt an answer as I know nyet, nada, zilt in sports. Today, the clue indicated a French last name, Lincoln’s demise and…WTH assassinated him? I had nothing. I wish I had heard that song before. 🙂

        • VJ says:

This was about James Garfield’s assassination, Cece.

Here’s A LINK to Tecumseh’s Curse that I had on Spoiler Talk that shows the 4 presidents who were assassinated and who did it. 4. Boo hiss to anyone going on Jeopardy! who doesn’t refresh their knowledge on that topic.

        • Cece says:

I meant Garfield! did I say Lincoln??? Geezz! I’m like that contestant that thought the moon was the sun. 🙂

    • Sooti says:

Judges got that one wrong. I have not read of any connection between autism and diabetes. You are not missing anything!

      • Cece says:

And Alex will never publicly admit that the judges made a mistake before the game tomorrow.

      • Cece says:

@VJ, thanks for the link — that curse thing looks very interesting. I always knew the names LHO and JWB, but not the other 2.

    • Eric S says:

If it is true that pregnant women who are at a higher risk for diabetes are more likely to give birth to children with autism (admittedly adding a small step beyond what Jacob and VJ have stated reading), then a link exists.
That is, to assume the clue reads as autism causes an increased risk for diabetes, is simply post hoc propter ergo hoc reasoning.
Even further, there is the logic that increased ice cream sales and increased murder rates are linked: both increases can be caused by the heat of summer. The word “linked” is rather accommodating.

  3. aaaa says:

THey also originally called Autism wrong for Diabetes on the $400 clue in Hazardous. Jacob then gets the DD in Hazardous, gets it right, and then autism IIRC is ruled right AFTER the DD. They often during DJ! mention reversed rulings right before a DD is played

  4. Dalton Higbee says:

Well, I was expecting Dan to win a sixth game and make more money. But I have to neverthelessly agree with Alex Trebek because well, some five-time champs may not make it to the Tournament of Champions.

    • VJ says:

well, for now anyway, Dan just went to the head of the class of 5x winners due to his “reckless” wagering no doubt. No guts, no glory.

  5. jacob ska says:

Congrats Eric on your 1 correct solve prediction.

Great that Jacob won the game. No bias here. lol

  6. VJ says:

Congrats, Eric, on the correct prediction. It’s still a bummer that they all didn’t know it. I was only making allowance for brain freeze.

I was tempted to use the Mr. Garfield Got Shot Down song — LINK — because that’s where I first learned that “Charlie Guiteau done shot a good man down.” But I used the Ballad of Guiteau from Sondheim’s musical Assassins because there are more ballads on the other assassins on youtube.

    • Eric S says:

Aww.thanks (to you all). It was an awfully long time ago.
As usual, VJ, not only a great account of the game, but great argumentation.

  7. doris s says:

Congratulations to Jacob for the win and to Eric for the right prediction.
And we have a new champion…

    • doris s says:

Btw, finally somebody who knows how to wager logically. For that an extra thumbs up!
