WHAT IS THE SWISS GUARD?

What’s a good date for this Final Jeopardy! clue? Today! 34 new Swiss Guards were sworn in at the Vatican earlier today. This is a short video of the ceremony but the whole Mass and ceremony is also on YouTube.

The Swiss Guard was formed in 1506 by Pope Julius II, a member of the della Rovere family. Blue and yellow were the colors of his family. Red was added later. Whether in honor of Medici popes Leo X or Clement VII, red, blue and yellow are the Medici colors. The Swiss Guard’s banner formerly changed to reflect the reigning pontiff’s colors. Today, the banner is a square with a white cross dividing it into 4 parts. The top left is the coat of arms of the Commander-in-Chief– the current pope (currently Francis). The bottom right is Julius II’s coat of arms. The other two quarters display the red, yellow and blue colors. The coat of arms of the Swiss Guard’s current commander (Christopher Graf) covers the middle of the cross.

Carrie thought it was the Italian army. She lost her $9,000 bet and finished with $1,600.

Matthew got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $26,400.

Weckiai went with the French Foreign Legion. She lost $6,801 and finished with $12,799. That made Matthew Smith the new Jeopardy! champ.

The one thing I with which I take issue is Carrie’s quizzical FJ response. Now, I only have a minor in French. She’s a professor of French. There is NO WAY she didn’t know that the FFL was formed in 1831. Then again, maybe she just wanted to put any answer down.

I have to be partial to Matthew, because I was a paramedic in my life!

    • VJ says:

Jason, it was Weckiai who went with the FFL. Carrie had the Italian army.

I don’t even drink anymore! I watched it last night, wrote the comment today. Sorry ’bout that!!

  2. Rick says:

The FJ threw me, and yes, the carefully worded clues were absolutely correct (as far as it went). However, I might add that the entire Swiss Guard uniform is actually made up of the colors red, blue, yellow and orange (with orange not being a stripe).

  3. William says:

Wikipedia [sic] jinxed herself by stating during the interview that the TOC was in her sights.
Don’t mess with the Jeopardy gods.

    • VJ says:

I think it was actually Ken who jinxed Weckiai — twice!! First, last Friday, in his intro he brought up the fact that she won her first 2 games without benefit of any Daily Doubles. Presto, on the second pick, Weckiai gets the DD and gets it wrong.

In this game, I can’t think of one good reason why he asked her if she thought she’d make the ToC, but I don’t think her response was overconfident. After 15 clues, she had over a $3K lead. But, yeah, it would have been better if she said she had high hopes.

Terrific late comeback by Matthew. He was barely involved in most of DJ.
I don’t say this often, but I found all 3 DDs easy. “Owls” and “church” were big clues on that middle one. Final was tough, had no idea, but it was a fair one.
