Currency (Final Jeopardy clue for May 31, 2018)

2x champ Jeffrey Schwarz, a private investor from New York, brought his winnings up to $52,500 yesterday. In Game 3, these ladies will try to send him home: Maryanne Theyerl, a veterinarian from Illinois; and Skyler Kelemen, a healthcare data analyst from Massachusetts.

Round 1 Categories: Books of the 1990s – TV & Movie Common Bonds – Adjectives – Miscellaneous – You Shall Not Pass! – Fly, You Fools!

Skyler found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “You Shall Not Pass!” under the $800 clue, with 6 clues to go after it. She was in the lead with $5,200, $2,400 more than Jeffrey in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Round 2 Categories: Architecture Words – Hey, Slim – Land – Comic Books Without Capes – On “Mars” – Monarchs Flutter by

Jeffrey found the first Daily Double in “Monarchs Flutter By” under the $800 clue on the 5th pick. He was in second place with $5,000 now, $2,000 less than Skyler’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Skyler found the last Daily Double in “Architecture Words” under the $2,000 clue. There were still 3 clues after it but the chances of seeing them were nil. In the lead with $17,800, she had $5,400 more than Jeffrey in second place. She bet $3,000 and took a guess with “frets.” That was WRONG.

The round ended there with Skyler still in the lead with $14,800. Jeffrey was second with $12,400 and Maryanne was in third place with $3,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS EUROPA? In Greek mythology, Zeus fell in love at first sight with Europa, a beautiful Phoenician princess. In the form of a bull, he carried her off to Crete and they became the parents of the mythological kings, Minos and Rhadamanthus. In some versions, they had a third son: Sarpedon, ruler of Lycia. Watch the video’s cool depiction of how the bull and Europa symbolize the continent of Europe.

The Bank of Greece has this info on the euro banknotes’ Europa series: “The new series of euro banknotes is called “Europa” because all its notes contain a portrait of Europa, a figure of Greek mythology and the origin of the name of our continent. This depiction comes from a vase, over 2,000 years old, which was originally found in southern Italy and now forms part of the Louvre museum collection in Paris.”

Maryanne crossed out Gaia, then changed to Hera. She lost $3,200 and finished with $400.

Jeffrey came up with Demeter. He lost $2,600 and had $9,800 left.

Skyler had Hera, too, and already knew she was toast! She lost $10,001, landing in second place with $4,799. So Jeffrey remains champ. His 3-day total is $62,300.

Final Jeopardy (5/31/2018) Jeffrey Schwarz, Maryanne Theyerl, Skyler Kelemen

Sorry ladies, no Reversal: On the $1000 clue in “Adjectives” (From the Latin word for “rainbow”, the colorful lining of an abalone shell is described by this adjective), Maryanne said opalescent and Skyler said luminescent. Trebek rejected both but assured them the judges would check on it. A swift verdict was returned that neither satisfied the “rainbow” part of the clue. Only “iridescent” was acceptable.

A triple stumper from each round:

BOOKS OF THE 1990S ($600) The beautifully dangerous Lucky Santangelo takes on Hollywood in this author’s novel “Lady Boss”

COMIC BOOKS WITHOUT CAPES ($1600) An ’80s band who sang “So Alive” was named after the underground comic “Love &” these, which is still published

I’m getting ready to watch game 1 of the NBA Finals. However, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow morning to comment on how shocked I was during the stand & stare ts on the photo of Jackie Collins. WHAT!?

  2. Louis says:

I thought these guys knew something about europa and the currency of Greece. Looks like Jeffrey will need to take a vacation to Greece and learn more about the money and it history. Maryanne couldn’t get any rhythm going so that whole “send Jeffrey home” was not to be seen. Also VJ was hera ever jealous of Europa for seeing Zeus after they had kids? I thought she was going to off her. This final jeopardy question should not have been that tough.

    • John B. says:

@Louis According to legend, Hera was the only one Zeus ever feared… She gave him He** Jealous does not even begin to describe it. Zeus fooled around with over 2 dozen ladies……

    • VJ says:

@Lou, as far as I know, Hera never found out about Europa. Here’s an article that tells what Hera did to some of Zeus’ other lovers

LINK: 9 more clues from the match

      • Lou says:

Thanks my friend. But then that would make Zeus a cuckold after sleeping with 2 dozen ladies. Geez, I guess Hera really was steaming mad after that. How did the other gods and goddesses took the news about Zeus and his wife cheating ways? I really hoped Pandora didn’t curse him or anything. Plus, aphrodite, Demeter, Artemis and so forth would definitely tell Zeus off if they did so,

        • VJ says:

You’ve got it a little backwards, Lou. Zeus would be a cuckold if Hera was sleeping around. But she was always faithful. I’m not into mythology that much but since Zeus was the head honcho, I would imagine that the other gods and goddesses had enough sense to mind their own business

  3. Richard Corliss says:

That reversal would’ve gotten away with it, if it weren’t for those contestants.

    • John B. says:

The clue was clear and the judges’ decision was correct.

And “Irida” is actually the Greek word for moon, it existed long before it was “adopted” into Latin.
You still find a modern use in medicine, the “Iris” of the eye.

      • Richard Corliss says:

Maryanne couldn’t get any rhythm going today she was up and down over and over and she Skyler & Jeffery kept mispronouncing the clues and adding more incorrect information especially the movie actor titles.

  4. John B. says:

Category was currency> Euro> area/zone where it is issued> Europe”> Europa. I wonder if any of the players knew that a “Europa” was one of the many lovers of Zeus, that she even existed???

Smart bet by Jeffrey though, so I guess for that congratulations are in order. He obviously knew his weakness and that is a strong quality: to know your limits.
