Final Jeopardy: American Composers (5-30-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/30/2018) in the category “American Composers” was:

His works are the only ones in the National Recording Registry that are preserved on piano rolls

New champ Jeffrey Schwarz, a private investor from New York, won $25,000 yesterday. In Game 2, he takes on these two ladies: Amanda McCLendon, a librarian from Texas; and Amy Cuzzolino, an attorney from New Jersey

Round 1 Categories: Music Industry Terms – Refrigerator Magnets – Sending an Anagram – The Hill – Daily Beast – Politico

Jeffrey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Hill” under the $400 clue on the second pick of the round. He was in the lead with no money, as Alex put it, because the ladies were both in the hole for $200. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Amanda finished in the lead with $4,800. Amy was second with $2,600 and Jeffrey was last with $2,400.

Round 2 Categories: Swisstory – General Knowledge – Visitors From Space – My Old “L.P.”s – Male Authors – Tribal States

Amy found the first Daily Double in “Swisstory” under the $800 clue on the second pick. She was in second place with $3,000 now, $1,800 less than Amanda’s lead. She bet $1,000 and thought it was Augustus. That was WRONG.

Amanda found the last Daily Double in “Male Authors” under the $2,000 clue on the 15th pick. In the lead with $8,400, she had $2,000 more than Jeffrey in second place. She bet $400 and took a shot at it with Faulkner. That was WRONG.

Jeffrey took over the lead on the last clue, just like yesterday, finishing with $14,000 this time. Amanda was next with $13,600 and Amy was in third place with $8,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS SCOTT JOPLIN?

Scott Joplin’s ragtime compositions on piano rolls from the 1900s were inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2002. From the Library of Congress website: “Scott Joplin is today regarded as the pre-eminent composer of ragtime compositions. Joplin himself performed some of these “rags” for piano roll sales. These rolls represent the way these compositions were originally listened to and enjoyed–on home player pianos…. This selection consists of the titles ‘Maple Leaf Rag,’ ‘Magnetic Rag,’ ‘Weeping Willow Rag,’ ‘Something Doing,’ ‘Pleasant Moments,’ and ‘Ole Miss Rag.’

As you will see if you follow that link, other inductees that year included Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First,” and Jesse Walter Fewkes’ field recordings of the Passamaquoddy Indians from 1890. Coincidentally, that tribe was one of stumpers in the Tribal States category today (see below).

Amy got it right. She bet $7,000 and finished with $15,000.

Amanda had “Morton” as in Jelly Roll. She lost her $1,400 bet, for a $12,200 finish.

Jeffrey also got it right. Whatever worries he had about the category didn’t prevent him from betting big. He added $13,500, winning the match with $27,500. His 2-day total is $52,500.

Final Jeopardy (5/30/2018) Jeffrey Schwarz, Amanda McClendon, Amy Cuzzolino

Congrats to Jeffrey, although who is Morton? Plus VJ. have you heard of The Entertainer by Joplin? Still I am amazed by Jeff’s calm and cool demeanor since he took his time with today’s game.

    • VJ says:

Sure, Lou, I’ve heard The Entertainer. Gotta admit I was hoping Amanda would win today but she lost the lead on that last clue, just like Virginia did yesterday. Wow! Wouldn’t it be something if that happened again tomorrow?
