WHAT IS POLIO?

Cedars-Sinai.org says: “Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a disorder of the nerves and muscles. It happens in some people many years after they have had polio.”

Polio is caused by a virus that is said to strike young children most often. However, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt contracted it at age 39 and became permanently paralyzed from the waist down. In 1938, FDR founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis which became the March of Dimes. The organization helped fund vaccine research. This led to successful development of vaccines by Jonas Salk in the 1950s and Albert Sabin in the 1960s. Cedar-Sinai says these vaccines “helped to wipe out polio in the U.S. and almost everywhere else. But polio is making a comeback. There have been recent outbreaks around the world.”

Jodi thought it was “stroke”. She lost half her score and finished with $1,000.

Mari went for post-traumatic stress. That cost her $12,100 and left her with $1,200.

Ryan’s response was measles. He lost $4,600 but won the game with the $13,400 he had left. His 7-day total is $145,201.

I thought that polio was the only possible answer and was shocked no one got it. There was a time, when playing along, I would rarely get an answer correct but nowadays I feel like Einstein. Also, why is Jeopardy heavy on the female contestants. We have not had three men competing, or two male challengers of a female champ i since Amy was champ or even longer. Why the obvious agenda?

Horrendous wagering in FJ. Mari should have wagered $4701, which would have surpassed Ryan if he’d bet $0. And he should have wagered at least $8601 to ensure victory if both he and Mari hit FJ. $4600 made no sense; he would have lost even if both he and Mari were correct on FJ.
And Mari’s wager would have knocked her down into 3rd had Jodi either bet $0 or nailed FJ.

FJ and most of the DDs were all tough, but to this former NYer, the Art Deco building was obvious.
“This man’s choice,” the soccer shoes clue, and the 4-letter AZ river were all pretty easy.

Yes, Ryan got lucky, as his wager would not have covered. I knew FJ because of my training, and the mother of a friend growing up had it.

Unusually for me, of late, I got all the TS on page 2. I thought that I had surmised “Columbiad”, but didn’t have the courage of my convictions, and, I remained silent. But, I don’t know that I would celebrate knowing the SS chief.

Ryan did, though, have his spectacles for this game! If I ever get on, I’ll need to be refracted before I go, so I can see the board!

Disappointed episode as all 3 DDs were missed and a triple stumper in FJ as today’s final was a tough one.

I would say that, but on the plus side, Ryan, you got lucky. He won 7 games & $145,201. We’ll see what he does in his 8th game tomorrow.
