WHAT IS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC?

The first issue of National Geographic magazine was published in October 1888. The first photograph appeared in its third issue. It was a relief map of North America that you can see on National Geographic’s Facebook. According to NPR’s timeline, more than half of the magazines pages were photographs by 1908. They also have a slideshow on there.

From 1996: MAGAZINES ($100) A 1927 issue of this magazine featured the first undersea photographs in natural color

Conor bet $13,000, bumping him up to $26,400. His $5,600 from yesterday gave him an even $32,000.

Sara didn’t bet anything so she remained at $14,800. Adding in yesterday’s $4,800 brought her up to $19,600.

Francois didn’t bet anything either. Today’s $21,200 and yesterday’s $20,400 came out to the winning total of $41,600. So Francois Barcomb is the 2019 Teachers Tournament champ and will be seeing him again in the next Tournament of Champions.

Congratulations to Prof. Barcomb, a physics teacher and ex-Navy guy worthy of his mettle, an honor for both Hendrick Hudson High School and their Sailors. The HudsonValleyOne reported that Prof. Barcomb said of his appearance on Jeopardy!, it was similar to defending his Ph.d thesis (SUNY Albany) from random questions. A very apt and good comparison, I think.

On Thursday Jeopardy! ran a spot announcement on the impending return of the incomparable and amazing Mr. James Holzhauer. Indeed, one has to dig for superlatives. I’ve been calling him the Woodchopper from Day #3, and I wondered why until I remembered that Dad became a lumberjack for a number of years after losing the farm in 1948. And I studied Deutsch in the early 1950s, and der Holzhauer means woodchopper or lumberjack. Also, Holzfäller and Holzhacker mean about the same thing. I like Holzhacker, that really sounds good too. Plus, my older brother served in Germany during the Berlin Airlift, an influence that filtered down to me.

No doubt, Mr. Holzhauser has put this 2-week break to good use. A breather in which to prepare and supplement perhaps some weaker areas of his vast knowledge. I hope he has a chance to tell us how he brushed up, if he needed to. He unexpectedly revitalized Jeopardy! and pulled it out of a (almost) boring rut. Hoping he can continue. One thing not mentioned by other contributors: Mr. Trebek has STOPPED urging contestants to keep on betting more and more each and every day. Yea! the Woodchopper cometh back! Keep chopping that wood, but beware of the occasional stick of kindling kick back to the noggin.

Hi Taiwan Bill, I’m hoping James keeps winning, too. I hope he has another 10 winning games in store for us, at the least.

Thanks for the info on his name. Great stuff!

I’m surprised there was no mention at all of Larry Martin’s passing. He died in January and the games taped in early April. Sara cpuld have wagered $12,400 or more and would have gotten an extra $25K, as she would have been in second place at the end of FJ!, and Conor would have been $7K over the third place minimum guarantee of $25K. I guess National Geog. would have been accepted for Francois’ answer, as Geog is an abbreviation. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Geograph without the IC on it would not have been accepted.

    • Richard Corliss says:

They don’t want to mention the passing because they don’t want to make people sad. I think in the next tournament of champions they’ll wear ribbons again.

      • Dal Higbee says:

I’m glad they didn’t mention Larry Martin’s passing, but it posted on YouTube on Feb. 1, 2019 (Jeopardy!’s YouTube page).

  3. Patrick Mallon says:

Francois Barcomb, who won the 2019 Teachers Tournament, will appear again in the Tournament of Champions.

  4. Jocelyn Foreacre says:

I wanted Melissa Okey to win

  5. Lou says:

Well now that the teacher’s tournament has come to a close, Congratulations to francois on winning. Now we can finally resume with James Holzhauer trying to get to the 2 million dollar mark. Glad this triple solve improved everyone’s score. So now with Francois in the toc, John dinerstein is out. Also VJ do you still keep any national geographic magazines in where you are?

    • William Weyser says:

Jonathan Dinerstein: You broke my heart, Robert Louis Stevenson! Harsh? Yes, but I wanted to say that.

    • JJ says:

@ Lou- if I may ask, sir, what is your favorite cover picture of all of the Natl Geographics that you’ve seen?

      • Lou says:

I liked the tigers mostly. Maybe the pandas as well. Those were my favorite. What about you?

  6. VJ says:

I forgot to add this reversal on the 15th clue of the first round:

SOMETIMES CAPITALIZED ($800) Capitalized, it’s a magazine; lowercase, it’s a cranberry cocktail its readers might sip

Sara’s response of “Metropolitan” was rejected. They wanted “Cosmopolitan” (which Conor got). At the start of the chat, Alex said they found out there is such a drink and it fits the clue.

    • Cece says:

Hey VJ, no biggie but, in the last paragraph before the contestants’ pictures, you left out the words “Tournament of Champions.” I know, it’s been a looong week. 🙂

      • VJ says:

Thanks, Cece. Actually I thought the week went by quick enough, I just had way too many interruptions yesterday.

  7. William Weyser says:

Congratulations, Francois! We’ll see you in the next Tournament Of Champions.

    • William Weyser says:

Speaking of Tournament Of Champions, I know, back to this again, but after my mom & I had a talk about my made-up Tournament Of Champions, despite some strict rules, I decided to not let the other 14 participants wait any longer, allow Francois in this made-up TOC, and push James Holzhauer over to the next 1. Anyways, here, once again, are the quarter-final matches, but this time for real.

Mon. Jonathan Dinerstein vs. Dana Wayne vs. Emily Frey
Tue. Francois Barcomb vs. John Presloid vs. Bif Reiser
Wed. Steven Grade vs. Anneke Garcia vs. Lindsey Shultz
Thu. Claire Sattler vs. Jackie Fuchs vs. Will Dawson
Fri. Eric R. Backes vs. Dave Leffler vs. Mary Ann Borer

      • Zoe says:

Hey I know your YouTube got terminated, but would you be able to send me those old videos of champions winning their tournaments in past ToCs like Russ Schumacher, Mark Dawson, Michael Falk, etc.?

        • William Weyser says:

I hope so, although I never uploaded Michael Falk winning the 2006 JEOPARDY Tournament Of Champions.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

This was a runaway tournament after Double Jeopardy. Sara wrote music notes with her name because she is a music teacher. I’m happy Francois defeated Conor for Melissa Okey. This was the most dominant performance by anyone in this tournament. Francois couldn’t be caught. He knew a lot more than he thinkS about a lot of subjects.
