Final Jeopardy: Science Words (7-8-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/8/2014), in the category “Science Words” was:

Appropriately, this word from Latin for “unfold” isn’t in the first edition of “Origin of Species” but does appear in later editions.

New champ Justin Nigro didn’t win much ($5,599) with a triple stumper in FJ yesterday in spite of playing the game very well. Perhaps he will be able to score big in his second game. His opponents today are: Campbell Warner, originally from Rock Hill, SC; and Maire Kennedy, from Santa Rosa, CA.

Round 1: Maire found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fatherly Nicknames” under the $800 clue. She was in second place with $4,800, $1,800 behind Campbell’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Maire finished in the lead with $6,800. Campbell was second with $6,600 and Justin was last with $4,000.

Round 2: Campbell found the first Daily Double in “Some ‘But’s About It” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $8,600, $1,400 more than Maire in second place. He bet $1,400 and he was RIGHT.

In traditional debate, each side makes both a constructive speech & this kind of speech. show

Maire found the last Daily Double in “Literary Clergymen” under the $800 clue. In second place with $9,200, she had $2,800 less than Campbell’s lead. She bet $3,000 and she didn’t know so she was WRONG.

Father Lankester Merrin is this title character of a 1972 William Peter Blatty Book. show

Campbell finished with $22,000. Maire had exactly half of that with $11,000, and Justin was in third place with $6,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS EVOLUTION? (also acceptable: EVOLVE)

“Toward the end of his life Darwin’s reluctance to discuss God diminished. It is in the sixth edition of the Origin where this shift is most noticeable. The sixth edition was the last edition edited by Darwin. It was released in 1872 — some thirteen years after the first edition was published. The word “evolution” appears for the first time in the last edition.” (American Thinker: What Darwin said about God)

Justin wrote “evolve” which was acceptable. He didn’t bet anything so he remained at $6,800.

Maire bet $2,601 and finished with $13,601.

Campbell didn’t bet a farthing so he won the match with $22,000.

FJ- 7-8-14

Campbell is a military attorney. In the first round, we were impressed with his knowledge of sports when he ran the category “Good Try”. Then in the second round, we were super-impressed when he went 4/5 in “Must You Go There?”, a geography category. The fifth clue ended up being a triple stumper: “To this Dutch dependency that’s the southern third of a Caribbean Island, yes; it gets a ‘Double A’ rating.” By then, the other players must have figured if Campbell doesn’t know it, neither do we.

2 years ago:: Only ONE of the two players still around in FJ got this in “Entrepreneurs”

In 1989 he said, “You can’t just ask customers what they want…by the time you get it built, they’ll want something new” show

@eric – These were the last 3 clues from the “Good Try” sports category —

($600) In 2013 Colin Kaepernick got this team to the 5 with under 2 minutes left but couldn’t score the Super Bowl-winning TD
($800) In 2014 a rain delay replay of the 2013 race led many to think this alliterative driver won at Daytona again; he was 5th
($1000) In 1969 the Jets & Mets each upset teams from this city to win their respective championships.

It looked like Justin only tried to ring in on the $600 clue.

Just saw this, thanks. I was wondering what was in the category. The $800 question I had to reference, my guess would’ve been right. Mark Martin finished high (3rd) and Kasey Kane had a pretty good pole position. That simply isn’t my sport, though: way too loud. I prefer horse racing (plus it’s quicker and you can bet on it). The 1000 question would be easy to misread as where are the Jets and Mets from, but those were both huge upsets that year. Thanks again and enjoy your puzzle.

      • eric s says:

P.S. Harsh about the hometown howdies (can’t get them on my phone, either), so thanks for showing the players.

      • VJ says:

yeah, maybe that was just a mistake on the part of whoever uploaded the vid — it makes no sense to make it private. TV stations sometimes run clips of their hometown players but I didn’t even see any of those so far.

  2. de says:

in fj why was it appropriate that evolution did not appear until later editions? Just jeopardy being pithy or cute?

  3. john blahuta says:

plus, as an added irony: fj was really easy.
had maire been wrong on a difficult clue, she might not feel that bad now. boy, i wonder if she is ever going to live that down in santa rosa. if i were maire, i would go into a “contestant protection program”….

    • eric s says:

I think that she freaked on the category. That’s all they know when they bet. She probably thought that she would have no reasonable chance. That is why you should always bet considering the game, not the category.

      • john blahuta says:

right. betting all and hoping for a tie was her ONLY option. she did not know whether campbell would know the answer, but SHE HAD TO KNOW HE WOULD NOT BET ANYTHING.HE COULD NOT BE CAUGHT, JUST TIED.
and since he OBVIOUSLY was not wagering anything all she could do was to match his 22K. had she been wrong, so she would have “won” 2K instead of 1K if finishing last. big whooping deal. to make sure you get 2 K instead of 22K???
her bet defied ANY logic, intimidated or not.
well, j saved 8.399 bucks. the number of times she probably kicked herself after the game, when the magnitude, the MONSTROSITY of her giving away being a co-champion dawned on her. just when i thought i’ve seen it all on j.
but it was a day for extreme things to happen. germany beat host brasil SEVEN to one at the world cup, and they could have won even higher. the biggest upset in the ca. 150 years of football history. if you had wagered that at the half germany would lead 5:0 you would have gotten 10.000 :1 odds. risk 10 bucks and walk away with a cool 100K.

        • eric s says:

Lol. Actually 23,000 b/c of money for next game. Absolutely stupid.
I know about Germany, 5-0 before 30 minutes! I don’t know that much about that area: do you think the local host crowd will be more for Argentina (if they make it) as neighbors or for Germany (haven throttled Brazil)?

        • eric s says:

Actually (revised) at least $21,000. LOL.

        • john blahuta says:

yeah, it is gonna be south america v europe, although normally there is no love lost between argentina and brasil in football. but brasil will root for whoever plays germany in the final. germany will be the archenemy for brasilian football fans forever. if you know what that sport means there, brasil was HUMILIATED before the home crowd. brasil will NEVER forgive germany for this. but they had no response for the german style. brasil conceded FOUR goals in SIX minutes. the germans made it look so easy as if they were warming up for a game. they played one touch football in the brasilian penalty area and the defense acted like anethetized.

        • eric s says:

Admittedly, it’s not my game. The last game I saw of Germany was the 2002 final. To me, that team was boring: get a lead and play keep-away. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the score earlier. I think what the Dutch have done in the last two cups is great, but I want to see Messi.

        • john blahuta says:

and why 21K???you lost me there…..next game???

        • eric s says:

If she bets it all, she gets 22,000 for this game (vs.the 2000 she got for second place) and she is assured 1000 ( at least) for the next game. So:22-2+1=21.
I’m out. Have a good night and enjoy the sunset.

        • john blahuta says:

gotcha. thanks and have a good night!!!

  4. john blahuta says:

    @vj

    it’s sint maarten.

    • john blahuta says:

      kind of obvious…….
heck, there were some lightbulbs burnt out today…

      • VJ says:

well, he got where Ulan Bator is and the capital of Somalia, which I wasn’t expecting going by the geography knowledge in recent months, though it did look like Justin was trying to ring in on both of those. The other 2 were easy and it looked like all of them knew them. He just beat Justin and Maire on the buzzer.

    • eric s says:

Ha, ha. Just found out that I was wrong. Never a surprise anymore.

      • eric s says:

Oh well, at least Antigua has two “a”s. And in the Caribbean.

        • john blahuta says:

barbados, jamaica, barbuda…and neither one is dutch.plus, i think they looked for 2 “a”s in a row, “double a rating..”??that’s the impression i got, hence sint mAArten came instantly to mind. also it is the southern part of the island, the north being french, “Saint Martin”. since i lived 3 years on barbados it was kind of easy for me. also, i can’t think of any other caribbean island belonging to 2 or more countries. they are all either independent,or a territory, dependency or colony of just 1 country.
but antigua and barbuda are now one country, yet 2 islands. just as trinidad and tobago. 1 government,2 islands.
1 government, 3 islands: ABC islands (aruba, bonair, curacao).it’s nice anywhere in the caribbean, just a little too hot when you grew up in a 4 season country with snow at christmas……

        • eric s says:

The two “a”s made more sense, but I had never heard of it, so I just wasn’t going to get it, ha, ha. Beginning and ending with an “a” was the best I could do: you work with what you got. Too damned hot for me down there anyway.

  5. aaaa says:

Maire just decided she didn’t want to win the game, deciding to wager to guarantee second place if correct. Alex even mentioned the two to one lead at the end of DJ! See more complaints about it at jboard.tv

  6. william k says:

Always interesting to watch someone throw twenty-ish grand away! Makes for good TV.

That’s a nice geography clue for a triple stumper, by the way, vj. Since I’ve actually been there –ala Jacob to St. Croix, perhaps?– that would have been an easy two grand pick-up. Ah well, someday maybe.

    🙂

    • eric s says:

Starts and ends with an “A” was my guess, but wouldn’t be surprised to be wrong (really never am anymore).

  7. esr says:

Wow, what a, ummmm, how do I put it politely, not well thought-out bet by Maire.

Or it just might be greed – wanting to win it all for herself?. Unlike Campbell who is at least okay to have a go for it with a tie.

  8. jacobska says:

Excellent played game. Fast paced. Campbell was certainly at his lucid best. I liked his wager which was zero. Which means he was going for a tie with Maire just in case she bet it all. Well executed game.

    • john blahuta says:

he would have been CRAZY to bet even a penny. he COULD NOT BE CAUGHT. worst case scenario: a tie. and maire just couldn’t think past her nose, guarding her second place. just when i thought i have seen it all in fj wagering. campbell wagering anything would have been a “cliff clavin”.
THE ONLY POSSIBILITY WAS THAT HE WOULD STAY PUT AND WIN FOR SURE (TIED OR ALONE).

  9. eric s says:

Was “evolve” given as a response?

    • VJ says:

yeah, by Justin. I put it in as acceptable in the FJ answer. Just added it to his response line.

    • john blahuta says:

don’t know yet, but they had to accept “evolve”, since the latin verb is “evolvere”and the clue said “from the latin for “unfold” and that is also a verb.
so either evolution or evolve had to be accepted.
but i am going to shake my head over this one for a long time. i wonder how maire was feeling, once she realized her snafu??

      • jacobska says:

Maire had to feel bad about her wager. Alex Trebek did not mind telling her that he hoped she bet it all before her amount was revealed. I guess she felt a little foolish after that statement by Trebek given that she did not bet it all. 🙁

      • eric s says:

They wouldn’t have to accept “evolve” if it had been mentioned in the first edition.

  10. eric s says:

Are your numbers right?!? Are you seriously saying that Marie had a chance to win (in a tie) and chose to try to protect her $1000. I knew the category may scare someone, but that is truly ridiculous.

    • eric s says:

Campbell must have laughed so hard on the inside, he had to at least smile on the outside.

    • john blahuta says:

i think it’s “maire”. have not seen the show yet but vj spelled it a few times. first i thought it was a typo and “marie”. here the game is not on for another 3 1/2 hours, so we will see.

    • VJ says:

      It’s Maire. Pronounced mare-uh.

  11. john blahuta says:

again, my position about leading players allowing a tie: had maire bet it all: co-champions.why guard against justin??? she MUST have known that campbell would not bet a penny, thus being GUARANTEED to be at least co-champion. a clear mental lapse by maire.
