WHAT IS CANADA DRY?

blog.TO has an article on the founding of Canada Dry in Toronto after John James McLaughlin got the idea when he was working at the soda fountain in a New York City drug store. You can get a good look at the logo with the beaver on a log, too. The logo must have been in use until 1903 because most articles I came across date the Canada Dry crown logo from 1904. The Canadian Government’s page on Canada’s Official Symbols says that the beaver was used as a Canadian symbol before the maple leaf.

Nice work if you can get it: This old Canada Dry commercial features Jack Elam, Broderick Crawford and Isaac Hayes singing Canada Dry’s “It’s not too sweet” jingle.

Ashley didn’t have a response. She lost $5,001 and finished with $2,199.

Omar went with Ozarka. That cost him $2,201 and left him with $9,999.

Will got as far as “Baro” and said he was going for Barq’s. He lost $2,400 and won the game with $70,501. Will’s 3-day total is $70,501.

Tough but fair FJ. “Beaver” led me to Oregon but I blanked out and eventually thought Coors. That was a daring 10K DD wager by Will and a good get. Korea was the 38th parallel, so that could not be the answer. A little more time and I might have figured it out. What a disaster that partitioning created.

Thought someone would know Buck and Clyde’s brother. Characters in a classic film. Wasn’t sure on the first DD, although “adorable” took me to the right guy. Figured out the L-L poker game without having to bluff!

Tonight’s challengers were competent, but it will take someone stronger to knock off Will. Because where there’s a Will, there’s a way!

    • Jason says:

I have to disagree, ever so slightly, in re: competent challengers. Not the strongest. And, Ashley’s less than max wager told me she wasn’t going to be aggressive enough. Also, since when is “Scarface” adorable?? I understand she wanted to say something, but…

I was just so close to FJ (NOT!!). I said “RC Cola”, then wondered if it could be Moxie.

      Finally, “isotope” X2?? C’mon, man!

      • VJ says:

Not for nothing, Jason, some credit must go to today’s challengers for the significant reduction in triple stumpers ,

Obviously gangsters weren’t up there on the radar today. Idk if it would have helped Ashley if her DD clue said infantile instead of adorable.

  2. Rick says:

My sister went with Hires Root Beer for FJ, , and I wasn’t even close. Anyways, that FJ was tough.

  3. Allen says:

The answer to final jeopardy was wrong. It is Canadian Pacific. Canada dry has and has always had a crown at the top since it started in 1904.

    • VJ says:

Do me a favor, Allen… click on the link in the paragraph after “WHAT IS CANADA DRY?” in the recap. There you will see the Canada Dry logo with the beaver on a log.

And, if you have the time to read the paragraph itself, you will notice that I pointed out that I saw many sites that said Canada Dry has been using the crown logo since 1904.

    • Jacob Ska says:

Allen, I think you misread the fj clue. Canadian Pacific is NOT a “beverage brand.” Also, Canadian Pacific does not have a “map” in its logo to my knowledge. I’m positive I heard Ken Jennings say that Canada Dry still has a map in its logo today when providing his explanation after all contestants provided an incorrect response before the show ended.

Also, fj clues are not supposed to have an answer as a response. The response must be in the form of a question. You stated “The answer to final jeopardy was wrong.” Merv Griffin, the creator of Jeopardy, would probably turn over in his grave if that was accepted as a correct statement when applied to his show Jeopardy.

And we got a triple stumper as today’s final was a bit tough.
