Final Jeopardy: Alphanumeric Anatomy (11-6-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/6/2018) in the category “Alphanumeric Anatomy” was:

Alphanumerically, it’s at the top of the spine and lets you nod

New champ Mary Ann Borer, a marketing coordinator from Pomona, CA, cleaned up with a $38,200 win yesterday. In her second game, and the last regular game before the Teen Tournament begins, her challengers are: Lonnie Weis, a creative director from Littleton, CO; and Chloe Sjuberg, a communications assistant from Vancouver, British Columbia.

Mary Ann finished in the lead with a runaway $25,200. Lonnie was next with $4,000 and Chloe, at negative $600, was out of the game.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS C-1?

This video will give you a quick overview of the cervical vertebrae, that are labeled C1 through C7 when referred to in medical reports, or as wikipedia puts it, “By convention, the cervical vertebrae are numbered, with the first one (C1) closest to the skull and higher numbered vertebrae (C2–C7) proceeding away from the skull and down the spine.”

Closely related: This was a DD in the 12/21/15 game and the player who had “Jeopardy! nails” got it: The first cervical vertebra is called this after a Greek god because it supports the head

Lonnie wrote down L-1, the first lumbar vertebra. He only lost $5.00 and finished with $3,995.

Mary Ann had “the first vertebra,” not good enough in this instance. She lost her $10,000 bet, but still won the game with the remaining $15,200. Her 2-day total is $53,400.

We will see Mary Ann again on Wednesday, November 21st.

    I love Mary Ann! Love her bubbly personality, and to think she was raised by grandparents who couldn’t read or write makes me admire her that much more!

  2. Albert says:

    Mary Ann is excellent, but it seems like she doesn’t have the makings of a 20-game winner like Julia Collins.

    I’ve got 10 more clues from the game up now: LINK

    @Lou, isn’t everyone required to take biology in high school? I was, much to my horror.

  4. Lou says:

    Unbelievable, the second day in a row with a contestant finishing in the red and unable to participate in final. This happened with Isaiah in the previous teen tournament back in 2014. But still though I thought the remaining people here knew a thing or two about the human anatomy and the cervical vertebrae. At this point congrats to Maryann on her second win and just two more and Erik will be bumped off the list. By the way VJ and John, have you guys studied anatomy and physiology in high school science?

      Coincidence much? Anyway, she will be back on November 21, Philippine time, as teens will compete for the 2018 Teen Tournament. Gosh, regular play will be one week AFTER my birthday. Anyway, this FJ! category is VERY, VERY tough.

        @J C A
        You know how it is. What’s tough for one is easy for another and vice versa. I would be very comfy in any medicine/body/drug etc category. Give me a category of English lit, especially those “romantic” novels and I’m lost.
        I have categories where I consider myself to be really good, others so-so and others where I would wish the earth would open and swallow me!!

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      Erik will be bumped off with just 1 more win by Mary Ann, unless she wins really small. Right now she is only 13.402 behind him.
      And as far as anatomy is concerned (and medicine in general) DID I EVER!!. When I studied history, I had 2 “so-so” semesters of medicine on the side and one of my best friends in Austria was/is a surgeon. So I would be very comfy with any body/medicine etc category…Sometimes I know more than I like to since there is always the danger that you become a hypochondriac. So having reliable sources and a good, long relationship with a doctor you trust and IS a good doctor, especially in terms of diagnoses (plural) is essential.
      Having a trusted pharmacist also helps since especially today doctors are overwhelmed by the number of (new) drugs, as opposed to 30 or 40 years ago. Today you have e.g. about a dozen different classes of antibiotics , for every part of your body, just to give ONE example. Don’t be too frightened but don’t be in denial of a potentially serious condition. Regular (2x a year) check ups with CBC(blood) tests help. Gotta find the middle of the road. I passed 70 already and am in a condition where (pun intended) some 30ish to 40ish people would give an arm and a leg to have my condition…😊😊

    I can’t remember when it happened (if ever?) 2 days in a row that only 2 players were left for FJ. Did that ever happen , VJ? If so it must have been quite awhile ago!

    Congratulations to Mary Ann! (The Balmoral miss was a little slip, the British Royal Family always goes to Balmoral when in Scotland), still she made 5 K off the 3 DDs.Too bad she missed the “alpha” part of the FJ clue. I hope the break is not interrupting her momentum. We often wonder why somebody wins 1,2 or 3 games handily and then falters. When the 2 or 3 wins are the last games taped for the day,( especially if it’s a Friday) then that can prove disastrous. You see that often in sports. A team or player (football, tennis etc) gets an extra week off and everybody thinks they/ or s/he are rested, but the momentum is lost. Fortunately she does not have to go across the country to come back, living in L.A. county.

    But even with the miss in FJ: over 53K in 2 days are not too shabby, Mary Ann cleaned up yesterday! Just one more win and Erik will probably be gone. Just a question of time anyway, I think.

    • John B./I. says:

      With only 2 players left for FJ I meant regular games, just to clarify.

    • Howard Groopman says:

      Very true. I was on “Split Second” in 1974 and won two games easily on a Friday night. Then had to wait 6 days to come back. I was nervous all week, knowing I’d be on for sure the first show, and vacillating about what I’d do with the car if I won it. They put the two smartest people in the new contestant pool up against me. We had a knockdown battle but I eventually lost.

    I hope this Teen Tournament will be better what happened 2 years ago.
    2nd day in a row with 2 players playing Final Jeopardy!. Just like Kids Week/Back to School Week 2005. Pranita Ramakrishnan finished Double Jeopardy! with -$400 and Brady Newell with -$5,000.
