WHO IS ELIOT NESS?

Eliot Ness (1903-1957) graduated from the University of Chicago in 1925 and went to work in the Chicago territory of the Retail Credit Co. as an investigator. Ness later became an agent with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Prohibition Bureau. He assembled a team of agents to tackle the rampant bootlegging racket in Chicago and became famous as the nemesis of notorious gangster, Al Capone. Ness reportedly said he called his men “the Untouchables,” because the abuse they took from Capone’s gang reminded him of India’s lowest caste. The nickname evolved into a metaphor for the agents’ refusal to take bribes, some of which were larger than their annual salaries.

I really couldn’t find much on an “obsession” with Sherlock Holmes, but I did find that Ness co-authored the 1957 memoir “The Untouchables”, which was used as a source for the “Untouchables” TV series (1959-1963), as well as the 1987 movie of the same name. That’s why Eliot Ness has a profile on IMDB.

Erin tried Raymond Chandler. She lost $2,000 and finished with $600.

Rahel went with Dashiell Hammett. That cost him $11,601 and left him with $1,799.

Ben thought it was Pinkerton. He lost $901 but won the game with $24,999. Ben Ganger is the new Jeopardy! champ.
