WHAT IS LONDONDERRY or DERRY?

The August 1969 Battle of the Bogside took place in Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland. From Ireland Calling: “The Battle of the Bogside was one of the first major confrontations of the Troubles and changed Northern Ireland forever…. Television pictures of the violence were beamed across the world, demonstrating the deep scars between the Catholic and Protestant communities and the volatility in their relationship. In an attempt to stem the violence, the British government sent in troops to restore order. It was codenamed Operation Banner and was supposed to be a temporary measure. In fact, it turned into a 38-year marathon… Britain’s longest ever military campaign.”

All the players responded with Belfast. Here’s an old clue from the 2013 Teen Tournament where Belfast was the right response and the players all blew that and all their money!! CAPITAL CITIES: It’s criss-crossed by dozens of “Peace Walls” that separate its Catholic & Protestant neighborhoods.

Bo and everyone else wrote down Belfast. Bo lost $4,000 and was left with $400.

Kristen lost $1,900. She finished with $5,100.

Zach lost $2,999. He won the game with $14,001. His 6-day total is $124,871.

VJ, is Brian Chang Cliff Chang’s brother?

  2. Robert says:

Another poor FJ answer. They are beginning to pile up. TVs are changing channels.

  3. Albert says:

For ‘Red Cent’ I had “Plumb Nickel”. Do you think I would have been given eventual credit for ‘Plumb Nickel’? I know the term. plugged nickel, but I have also heard the term, plumb nickel, a few times in my life.

Also, is plumb nickel a malaprop such as “albacore around my neck”? Thanks in advance for any responses.

    • VJ says:

Albert, here is the clue:” Something valueless is “not worth a” this colorful 2-word coin phrase.” Plumb nickel, plug nickel or wooden nickel would not work here because of the specific use of the word colorful.

I think the plumb part of “plumb nickel” refers to lead and “plum nickel” is a corruption of that.

  4. William Weyser says:

This reminds of me of way back in 2013, when everybody in that year’s Teen Tournament picked Dublin, but the correct response was Belfast, and they all lost everything. So, there was no winner in that Semi-Final Game, and they allowed the highest scorer among non-winners: Leonard Cooper, with $30,200, take the 3rd spot in the Finals, and he went on to win the tournament. Today, everybody picked Belfast, but this time, it was not the correct response. That would be Londonderry, or Derry. Curse You, Belfast! Anyways, Zach Newkirk is now a 6-Time Champion, and he’ll be back on Monday, to see if he can tie with Brian Chang for games won on “JEOPARDY!”.

    • VJ says:

yeah, that clue from 2013 is in the recap, 2nd paragraph after NONE of the players got Final Jeopardy!

  5. Lou says:

Let’s hope Zach can keep his streak going next week. It would be great to have two seven game champions to get 2021 rolling. We’ve had three 8 game winners so far.

  6. rhonda says:

You were a lucky duck, VJ, you dodged Amy Lowell by a week!

    • VJ says:

I know, Rhonda! I was super surprised to see ol’ Amy show up in that Poet-pourri category. That’s her first clue since 4-25-2017!!!!

      • rhonda says:

That was quite unexpected, and how it showed up in the second round as part of the clue, too.
And we had another grape mention tonight as well!

  7. Ismael Gomez says:

We end this week with another triple stumper and today’s FJ wasn’t nice to anybody.

  8. Kevin Cheng says:

Also, this was the first time this season that everybody had the same wrong FJ! response. When was the last time everyone had the same wrong FJ! response.
